    Hello,

I have a problem that is eerily similar to a very recent article by skelgok.

I have recently put together my first PC and I am having a problem, surprise surprise. The computer will not boot up when I press the power button at the front of the chassis.

There is 120V in the outlet, and the on board power switch's LED is on on the motherboard. The fan is not spinning but it is clearly supplying power to the motherboard. Nothing happens however when I hit the button. I checked the connections for the switches and they are in the right spots on the board.

There are only two LED's on this board, the on board power switch has one and the DRAM_LED. The ram led does not turn on.

Any idea what is not working correctly?

The motherboard is an ASUS P6X58D-E, and the power supply is a Corsair 850 Modular supply.

    Thanks

    Hi and welcome

Switch off at the wall but leave the plug in to maintain the ground ( earth ) connection.

Try taking the RAM out of their slots.

    Switch on.
If you have the case speaker connected or on-board speaker you should get POST beeps.

If you do - then try the RAM one at a time.
If you put a module in and do not get POST ( if you did with the modules out) then you have identified your problem - faulty RAM.

    ========================

If you don't get POST with the RAM out then continue stripping down the cards / connections off the motherboard.
RAM / Sound / Ethernet / Video cards etc all out.

Take the data cables for the hard drive and dvd drives off the motherboard.

Disconnect the power (molex) connections to the hard drive and dvd drive.

Leave ONLY the 20(4) pin connection from the PSU connected.

    Switch on.

You should get POST beeps now.
If not - it could be PSU / motherboard related.

Hi and welcome to our Computer Help Forums, Stanton!

Must be frustrating to have that snag with the computer but hopefully it will be working great now - and may I ask a favour, please? Could let let us know if it is - and if not, I'm sure KenB will be ever so happy to continue helping until a solution is found.

We're a truly friendly site so do hope you feel confident to post in any of the various computer sections and, of course, our social area too - and again, a happy welcome to you, Stanton!

    Mara :)

Double check the case connection wires, the fact that they are in the right place is only half the issue, they have to be the correct orientation, each case wire has a + and a -
if your power one is in the wrong way it wont boot up
If you look closely near the pins on the MOBO some have a - and + symbol near each pin, otherwise use the MOBO manual :)
