My budget for the new computer is: $600-650ish

What are the primary uses for this computer: basic school needs plus some lite gaming. My college tells me that I need 4gb ram and an i5 processor.

Do you play games? If so, what type of games? Yes. Combat arms and minecraft type games

Do you tend to have a lot of programs running at the same time, or do you close every program when you are done using it? I usually close everything, although I would prefer to be able to leave more things up

Do you store a lot of pictures or music on the computer? Not much. I don't think I will need anything more than a 500gb of space

There are so many options out there, and many sites offer student discounts. I am not sure where I should go for the best deal.

So based on what you require, you need a good processor, standard RAM and HDD space (as 4GB and 500GB are common in laptops now) and a little bit of graphics oomph.

I'm not sure of prices as you'll need to search around a bit as I don't know of many US retail shops, but you probably want to look for something like this based on your needs - http://www.newegg.co...N82E16834215417

It has the i5 processor, 4GB RAM (upgradeable to 8GB) and 500GB HDD you require plus a reasonable graphics card to boot, I'm not sure if battery life is an issue, it's rated for 4.5 hours which I'd knock down to 3-4 hours with normal use (manufacturers test with most things turned off/down which isn't realistic).

In technical details, the Nvidia blows the AMD out of the water for clock speed and 3DMark tests. In practical use the Nvidia also beats the AMD with providing higher FPS in Dirt3 and Fifa 12, but in BF3 it seems the AMD gains 2 fps over the Nividia. I believe this is due to the fact that the AMD has a lot more CUDA cores than the 630 and also uses GDDR5

The Nvidia 650M on the other hand, destroys them both.

That system should easily cope with the demands of your gaming choices, and the processor is more than enough to cope with any tasks your college can throw at you and all for a nice price! Looks like a similar setup to my Novatech gaming laptop :p
