So a few days ago, my laptop's wireless internet started to run very slowly. I figured it might be simply over used so I decided to run a speed test on my nexus 4. On my laptop's speed test I got 0.5mb/s download and 0.1mb/s upload speed. My normal is 45+mb/s and 3+mb/s. On my phone I got 17mb/s download and 3mb/s upload. So I decided to reset my router and nothing changed. I then thought maybe my speeds were being controlled from the router (my parents have a history of router locking me so I spoof my MAC address), so I put in a completely different MAC address. Still I had no luck. This is about everything that I've tried, there may be more but I don't remember anything else. If you have any ideas of how to fix it please reply.

I know I have no viruses, I ran avast multiple times to be sure of this.

Just an update, I get normal speeds when I connect to a different network.

This is a scenario which I can't explain. When you reset the router, was it a hard reset where it took the router back to factory defaults or was it simply a soft reset?

A hard reset typically involves holding the router Reset button in for 10 seconds, while a soft reset is merely tapping the Reset button once.

What's the router manufacturer and model?

Hi, please follow Dragnets advice and answer his questions as best you can.

However for now do not do the full hard reset. You would need all the ISP details including passwords, some ISP's do not provide a password with pre configured routers is why I am asking you not to do the hard reset until we know a little more.

Next is a question from me, you mention your parents have done normal parental duties by locking the router which you say you have by passed such things. I quote your bracketed statement:- "(my parents have a history of router locking me so I spoof my MAC address)"

Even if you are old enough, the router is not yours and I assume the internet service is also provided by your parents.

So bearing that in mind we cannot help with issues that you should take up with your parents, if indeed they have done something within the router settings that are giving you the slow speeds. It is between you and them, not us.

if they give permission, and we would like proof of that, then we may be able to help further if indeed your parents have not altered any settings.

    Nev.

I just want to note that I made a similar observation as PlasticNev's regarding the rights of the parents in this case and agree that it may be time for us to back off until we are satisfied that this grey area is not getting darker.
