I wanted to do something different to the usual assembling of Computers in towers as they present no challenge to me anymore. Have a fully equiped workshop which I haven used for ages so I googled had someone ever assembled a computer in a cylinder. None to my searching as every surface is naturally curved and creates a real challenge which being bored thought I would give it a try. Two things concerned me was audio hum and with so much hardware and wiring in such a confined space would it stay within the normal temps. I wanted to use a normal size Motherboard and power supply to make it more challenging. Very hard to do as you have to work from the inside out. I finally got it together for the second time as the new PSU was D.O.A. Because I put two small pop rivet holes in the back of the PSU my warranty was null and void naturally so straight in the bin.
Have tested now for 12 hrs and the cooling is within recommended temps and no audio hum. I am sure the winds tunnel effect has helped in cooling. All the Mobo USB /DVI/Anologue/Ethernet ports are internal so I fitted 5 USB ports to end covers and analogue port. Only two cabled come out of the rear and thats the Ethenet cable and DVI cable to the monitor.Took many hrs to build however it is nice when something you do works to one's expectations. Am I nuts?

You ask the question "Am I nuts?"
    Perhaps, but very nicely nuts!

You just may have started something here Dougie, folks will be building computers inside all sorts of different things next. I wonder if I can get the bits to fit in my washing machine and still keep it working as a washing machine as well? :bnghd:

Hi Dougie, What's the approximate diameter of the cylinder? Nice piece of work!

    Thanks Bill.
I used 250mm OD 240mm ID pvc pipe (5mm wall) what they use for underground water and sewer pipe here and bought end caps to suit.
I am using it now to post this reply.

I had to buy a right angled drill adaptor so I could drill from the inside out to be accurate. $14.50
All other tools needed I had.

Now that's different. Apple's Mac Pro is a cylinder, but this looks more useful.

After a second look, I really like it, the finish is very professional looking, it must have taken a lot of planning to get right. Well done Dougie and a superb job done.

I remember when you first talked about this Dougie. I was intrigued with the idea then. Great job mate! It's given me some ideas of my own.

I was thinking the same thing, Match.

Especially because I have a four year old and a one year old that I take care of during the week.

It is still very, very cool!

It sits on four hard rubber legs positioned just so the end caps clear the table, and because the weight is so low it is much more stable than a tower. The legs actually are hard to slide as the rubber type legs grip the table.
If you push sideways it is so hard to move.I am suprised it is so stable. The legs are an angle and help to stabilize.
Takes roughly 4 times more pressure to move compared to my computer towers.

I disconnected 2 of the 4 fans as a test and still running within recommended temps..

Out of interest I just put it on a new digital scales and total weight is seven Kilos.
It has such a low centre of gravity it is so stable.
    I am surprised myself.:)

Here is a view of the legs and the rear. Total length is 400mm.Looks longer in photo.
Sat it up on box to get s better view of legs.
The rear has USB2 and USB 3 and analogue headphone outlet.
The bottom 3 cables coming out has a USB cable for printer. Top cable is keyboard.
Need to buy covering for bottom 3 cables yet.

Nice project reminds me of my old mITX blender system. Now that was small.

What processor did you use? I see an Asus 760g board I have used maybe 5 times in builds. I see also what looks like a PCI GPU? The board has onboard HD 4200 but I am sure you have a reason for using the PCI GPU.

Hi ChronoGeek. This was a computer tower under my bed not being used so decided to do something unusual with it.
These are the specs. I wanted to use the Graphics card (cheap and nasty with no fan.Elcheapo) to see if there was enough clearance to remove easily. Was brought to my attention I forgot to fit a carry handle which I will do. This is not a rocket ship but runs quite fast.
