On start up `my documents` appear, (a lot of photo`s and drawings) are scanned, and it takes ages
scanning them. Is there a way of taking `my documents` of the start menu.

HP pavilion + philips monitor screen.

Sorry if in the wrong place.

I am not exactly sure what you mean. Are you saying that your computer opens your "My Documents" folder when it boots instead of showing your desktop?

What is doing all that scanning? What security programs are you using? It should not be scanning everything on boot.

I know there is more than one question here but please answer them all.

OK I need a bit more information. Most important what operating system are you using? We need to do some work on your settings both in Windows and Avast.

OK I see you are using XP. There are 2 issues. One can be solved by exploring your settings in Avast. I don't have it installed but there is a setting in advanced for Scheduling boot time scan. You should be able to change that to never. Avast must be fully open before you can do that so you need to wait for it to complete the memory scan or skip it. That being said, if your computer was booting normally, a boot scan should not take any noticeable time.

That however is not your main problem.

There is a slight possibility that msconfig has My Documents listed as a start up. Frankly I have never seen that but you can check by going to your start Menu and then your "Run" box. Type "msconfig" (no quote marks) and then enter (or OK) Msconfig should open. There are a number of tabs one of which is Startups. Click on that tab and you will get a list of startup items with little boxes that are either checked (ticked) or unchecked. If "My Documents" is there make certain that it is unchecked and then save your changes. That may solve the problem but I doubt it.

More likely you have an error in your registry that is causing "MY Documents" to open on boot. I am going to give you the Microsoft instructions for fixing it. This, however, requires you to open your registry editor. You should create a restore point first. If you are not comfortable editing your registry you need to find someone who is comfortable with it. It really is not that difficult if you do nothing more than what is suggested. Under no circumstances should My Documents open when you boot your machine unless you have created the registry entry yourself.

    Here it is:
    1.Start>Run>Regedit>ok

2.Now navigate to the following key:-
    HKEY_ LOCAL_ MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

3.Look down the list in the Right Hand pane, scroll down to the value Userinit This value should read: C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe, (The comma at the end must also be there)

4.If the value is different from that mentioned above then Right Click on the Userinit value and, from the drop down menu, select Modify. Type in the value C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,in the Modify dialogue box click OK

    5.Exit the Registry.Restart your computer.

Let us know what you intend to do. Believe me it really is not that difficult if you just limit yourself to the changes that are suggested.

    Hi manofkent

If you are not comfortable with editing the registry and for some reason your Documents folder has been added to the start list, there may be another way to help you.
If you run the program below, it will give us a report of all your startup entries (as well as a lot of other things) we can write you a simple script to remove the Document entry (if it's there)

    • Download OTL to your desktop.
right click on the link and select 'Save Link/Target As'.

if you have problems, try this download link:
      OTL
    • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
    • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
    • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check
    .

    .
    .

Now copy the lines in bold below.

    netsvcs
    msconfig
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.*
    %systemroot%\system32\Spool\prtprocs\w32x86\*.dll
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\system32\*.exe /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    %PROGRAMFILES%\*
    %USERPROFILE%\..|smtmp;true;true;true /FP
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU
    hklm\software\clients\startmenuinternet|command /rs
    hklm\software\clients\startmenuinternet|command /64 /rs
    CREATERESTOREPOINT

    • right click in the Custom Scans/Fixes window (under the blue bar) and choose Paste.

      .
      .
    • Click the Run Scan button.

    • Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
    • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
    • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post them with your next reply.

    Thanks

Well gentlemen, my daughter has seen your solutions, and could not resolve the problem.
It seems that I did a lot of photo`s and drawings using a LEXMARK printer, and I have since changed to an H.P.printer.
When using the Lexmark there was a slot with ` Lexmark Photo Editor ` on it, which I used. It appears there is a conflict
between the two printers, as we cant delete the Lexmark printer from the `add / delete` section. Although the H.P.
printer has been install, the computer says that the Lexmark is the main printer and cant be uninstalled.
I was thinking of copying all my photo`s and drawing, then one by one deleting each one (approx 200) then try deleting
the Lexmark printer. May be you have come across this problem before, perhaps you have not !
The reason for the change ... cheaper inks !
Thanks you both for your help !

    back later !

Now I am totally confused. My understanding is that your computer booted to the my documents folder every time you started the Machine. That is an entirely different issue than the one you have presented now. You can change your default printer from the control panel of your computer. You can also copy anything to a new folder without removing them from the original folder and you can do that in bulk rather than one at a time.

I am just not sure what this has to do with the original problem you reported???? Like I said "Confused" :bnghd:
