As it should be a bit obvious by my avatar, I am something of a musician, also a sort of experimenter in new musical sounds and tunes, so some time ago I bought two programs both at great expense called Sibelius, the other called Finale.
Of the two Finale is the one I prefered, and has stood me in great stead ever since.

However I also have been looking at what is available for free in the open license or other domains. I have looked at many during the course of time, some reasonable and some a complete pain and of not much use at all.
So consider my surprise and even joy at finding a thing called MuseScore. available for free from here=

    http://musescore.org/

This is a notation program which is used for writing those strange tadpole shaped things on lines, which in essence is a way of writing music down so other musicians can play the same piece.

Finale or Sibelius do exactly that and also give you the writer a lot of useful tools to supplement what you write so the following musician can get it right when he or she plays it.

MuseScore does the same, with only a few odd things not there that the paid for does have, but not really of much importance to creating a finished musical score.
I find it brilliant, and is the most comprehensive free program for doing what it sets out to do, and has saved me the expense of updating the now old Finale to the latest edition.

    Hi Nev

I have downloaded this and, for free, it looks an amazing piece of software.

I have recently taken up the piano again after more decades than I care to count, so may find this useful.
I will give you a shout if I get stuck :)

Hi Ken,If you look on their website, you will find they also have a users forum for discussing glitches and general use or problems encountered in its use.
Plus also a wish list for any improvements to go into the next version.
