Not sure whether this is a hardware, software, or browser issue. On my preferred browser, Firefox (50.1.0), this has been happening about half the time. Does not seem to happen if I use Chrome, or local programs. I've had a suggestion to replace the mouse, but if that were the problem I would expect it to be consistent regardless of the program, website, etc. in use. In the past I've received excellent help on this forum, so I'm back, hat in hand, once again looking for some wisdom. I know it's not, strictly speaking, a W7 issue, but perhaps someone on this site has seen this before.

Thank you, allheart55, just finished following your suggestion, looks like that may have been the solution. This forum has been an enormous help to me several times now.

Well, it seems that I do have a wrinkle- Firefox did save my (many) bookmarks, but I can't get them back displayed along the top of the screen. Tried to do this, but failed.

I'm not a Firefox user so I am unable to help you with that but almost all of our other tech's use Firefox exclusively.
I'm sure that one of them will be able to help you straighten it out.

I have Windows7 and Firefox. Trying to work out exactly what you mean.
Do you mean your bookmarks are not showing along the top of the screen?
If that's the case then Right Click at the top of the screen, and put a Check Mark in the"Menu Bar" in the drop down box which appears, and they will show again.

Thank you Dougie- I just found this solution myself and came here to post my update, and saw your post. Like many other things in the computer world, it's easy when you know how!

Update- the original mouse problem persisted after the refresh. But it turns out that the mouse itself was the culprit- once I tried an identical new one (nothing special, Logitech optical, wired), not only was the multiples issue solved, but some other quirks that I had been ignoring are now fixed as well. And the new mouse, esp. the scroll wheel, feels crisper. And I have to say- it's comforting to have folks like you willing to offer remote diagnosis, a real safety net for those of us who grew up in the age of steam!
