I was in a class many years ago. Users had individual computers. The
instructor, from his computer, could select any user and "tap-in" to the
user's screen and watch every move the user was making, without the user
knowing. How is that done? It would sure save a lot of "come here and see
    this" in the office.

Is it a hardware solution or just software? Aside from spying, what is the
    process called?

    thanks!

Probably with UltraVNC. There's an option to just watch without alerting the
logged on user. There are other tools out there that some training centers
use as well that are more elaborate for a cost, which control the whole
classroom, allows to remote in and assist students, etc.

    Download UltraVNC:
Remote Support Software, Remote Support tool ...Sep 1, 2008 ...
UltraVNC is a Free remote control software to access distant computers
UltraVNC can be used as helpdesk remote control software. ...

We use "LanSchool" which is good and not too expensive.

There are 10 types of people, those that understand binary and those that don't.

That's a good product. There was another one we looked into using at our
training center, but I can't remember the name.

Funny, I looked up LanSchool, and found a couple of links where high school
kids show how they attempt to bypass LanSchool monitoring, but many of them
don't have merit, because they speak of uninstalling it or killing it in
task manager, but then again, that will alert the trainer. If they are
domain users with restricted access to control panel and other restrictions,
it won't work anyway. Interesting how kids try to get around that stuff.
