Well, I got the SIM card out. Had to remove the battery first. Card was a small square of paper with a chip on it. A new experience.

Yes, in each phone you'd have to remove the battery to get the SIM out.
Did you factory reset the phones? You want to eliminate any contacts that were stored, text messages, passwords for websites, gmail, etc.

After the phones are factory reset, you can drop them off at Best Buy. No charge to e-cycle them. If you can use the charging cables, keep them. If you have no need of the charging cables, e-cycle them too.

Mainly I wanted to dispose of them easily in a way with no threat of damage to myself in any way. So I thought removing the SIM card which may contain personal information was the best way. But I really know nothing about this. They are not worth very much and were inexpensive phones to start with and the phone I got was the cheapest they offered so no financial gain since not getting a top of the line phone. I was afraid to simply throw them away for fear of personal data they might contain.

Don't throw them in the trash. They should not be in a landfill. Dispose of them at BestBuy where they can take out parts.
First turn on the phones. You'll see some sort of message about no cell service; you can ignore it. It might connect to your home wifi. I've not removed only move the placement of a SIM card so I have no experience with what you will see. If you open things like contact or files, does anything appear? The SIM card give the cellular network data but phones still have internal storage so I suspect your contacts and files are stored there.

Press the Volume up key and the Power key at same time until the screen lights up.

If the SIM card is out do I need to put it back in and charge the phone which has not been used for over a year? I will have to give myself a phone refresher course. All I did before was mostly simply make calls. And carry it when went anywhere by car. There is probably no rush now anyway.

You can charge the phone without replacing the SIM card.

You were right. I found the charger and it charged up. Guess I do not really need a SIM card if not planning to use it. Minutes plan expired long ago anyway. Just thought it was safer to discard if no SIM card in it.

I plan to discard these phones anyway so maybe I will just remove the SIM cards and discard phones in trash, maybe hammer them first?

Please don't put them in the trash. The landfills do not need items that usable things can be removed from.

Remember your google information is on the phone (gmail sign in which goes for every google service) so you want to Factory reset the phones.
