  1. There is a program update available from Windows Update. It is listed under
    optional updates

    Have fun!

  2. Well, it's available via Microsoft Update website (if you're running WinXP)
or if Microsoft Update is your default update source in Vista and higher.

The version update is also available via MSE's internal updater, at least
according to this post in the MSE beta forum:

Just to update here - I am trying to get confirmation, but it appears that the
64 bit version has not yet been staged. The 32 bit upgrade is available from
    within MSE.

    Hello John:

We realize much may have been going on in your life when MSE Beta came
out earlier this year. However John, Googling would have shown you
it's Beta, and, an update to a beta still makes it a beta.

If you haven't already downloaded the MSE Beta installer from
Microsoft, only far less reliable sources remain.

Not there for me (I'm in Canada). It's offered to 'select' countries. From the website:

You appear to be in a country or region where the Microsoft Security Essentials Beta is unavailable.

This beta is available only to customers in the United States, Israel (English only), People's Republic of China
(Simplified Chinese only) and Brazil (Brazilian Portuguese only).

I wondered as to how they arrived at that eclectic collection of countries
    to test the beta in....
