Hi Guys.I am not supposed to be back on a computer for another 3 days but felt I needed to post,

With respect Wildman, there is absolutely nothing wrong with MSE.
How much Ram does your Computer have?
It is you and probably the way you have your virtual memory set.
MSE is the most user friendly of the top AV'S
It is not a resourse hog as you claim.
Go into MSE settings and you can configure to use as little as 10% of your CPU.
No other AV gives you that option that I am aware of.
A quick scan takes about as long as it takes to make a coffee.
You can minimize and keep working.
I can't see a real issue here that you can't overcome.
I now have MSE on all computers including a HP Laptop. :smile2:

DSTM sorry if I left the impression that MSE was a resource hog, because that is not what I think. My concern was that MSE kept asking me to do a scan an indicated that I was not protected. I think that may now be resolved, but am not 100% sure. My attempts to use other anti virus programs have shown them to be a wee bit demanding on the resources and thus I am back to MSE. I have 2GB RAM. All that I read shows MSE to be well thought of.

    Thanks
    Wildman

I think, wildman, that while you may understand it, the concept of MSE leaving you without protection if you fail to do a scan is not quite accurate and I am not sure that is even what you meant. I don't have MSE on this computer but I do on others. The MSE icon does turn color and warns you about a time lapse between scans but that is more like a "mother hen" type of warning rather than an indication of a lack of protection.

MSE's real time protection does not stop simply because you fail to heed that warning. It can be avoided by properly scheduling your scans. As DSTM says, the quick scan runs pretty quickly and can be run in the background.

    wildman,
The other option you have is to schedule MSE to run daily. Its one of the scheduling choices and would probably stop the warnings you are seeing, without causing any harm or stress.

BeeCeeBee is correct. ( althought the icon is still the same color..... the icon pic changes from a 'Tick' to an 'Exclamation mark' )
Just because you get a warning ( your system may not be protected) doesn't mean that you are not protected.
The realtime scanner will still be running.... it's just MSSE's way of saying that you haven't run a scheduled scan, that's all.

Okay the icon is now green an that's a good thing. I got a wee bit nervous when it went yellow an said I was potentially unprotected. I think I have the schedule properly set and the CPU I set to 30%

    Thanks

Actually I have learned that there is a point when performing a scan is necessary: If you receive either of the following warnings perform a quick scan immediately:

    1. You have not performed a scan in X weeks. If you fail to perform a scan within the next 48 hours we will blow up your computer.
    or
    2. You have not performed a scan in X weeks. Keep in mind that we are Microsoft and we know where you live. Please perform a scan now.

If you receive either of these notices I would suggest an immediate scan. As an alternative you can pack up all your belongings and move. :)

    You forgot number 3

3 You have not performed a scan in X weeks. Disconnect your computer, place it back in all its original packaging and return it to where you bought it. You are not fit to own a computer.

Please note, numbers 1 to 3 are jokes.

I had the same problem on a windows xp laptop, Seems it's Ccleaner that's deleting the scan histories, so MSE had no idea I had just run the scan a few hours before.  Here's the link with the solution that I found (I take no credit for this).  http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/protect/forum/mse-protect_scanning/microsoft-security-essentials-keeps-thinking-it/46aed102-59fe-45c4-9b19-2edce1674460?msgId=978aee44-d892-4b78-9732-ff02f1112cfb  If the link doesn't work, here's what you need to do with Ccleaner, " Open CCleaner Applications Tab, then Under Windows uncheck MS Antimalware...that should prevent CCleaner from deleting the MS Antimalware scanning history files.

Per suggestion of  MartinHampton  you  may  also need to uncheck MS Management Console."  I did both of these things.  Best of luck!
