For reasons I have no idea of, this program keeps saying my system is not protected and I need to perform a scan. I have uninstalled this program an gone back to Avast. Anyone have an idea as to why all of a sudden this is taking place with Security Essentials?

    Thanks

    Hi wildman,

You are obviously referring to this screen:

If you look at the bottom of the screen pic you will see the reason.
A scheduled scan has not been run.
It's just a safety feature to let you know that a scan hasn't been run when it was scheduled to.
    Eg:
It could be set for a Sunday ( at a set time) and your system may not have been turned on.
Or it may have been in use ( depending on the settings)
Obviously you don't have to go with the default day and time that MS set.

Just learn the settings and how they are set.... no need to change the AV!!

    Btw:
I'll move this thread to: Windows Security
as Security Blogs and Alerts isn't really the correct forum for the post.

I had the schedule set for Sunday at around 6:00 P.M. A check before I uninstalled it showed that it had run at that time. I will be frank and say I never did fully like MSE as I thought it was way to dependent upon IE to function well. I may be wrong but that was an to some extent is still my opinion.

I find that a very odd comment.
I hardly ever use IE ( more of a plaything than an actual browser for me) and have never even thought of MSSE as being in any way dependant on IE.
Maybe others think the same as you.... i just don't find it that way.
Actually IE is a much better browser now than it was..... but i prefer FF because of the addons etc, that's the only reason i stick to FF.

I am with you all the way Starbuck, just to add my backing, MSSE is my choice and also use FF exclusively.
Why there should be any thoughts that MSSE is linked to IE I find hard to comprehend, one is a browser, the other is an antivirus. OK both made by Microsoft but that is the only link I can see.

I used to use Avast and did so for a very long time, however, there seems to have been some sort of shift in their business etiquette and the way they do things, so some things changed, and quite badly for me, the program suddenly started throwing up too many false positives and rescuing important program files out of the Avast quarantine was getting to be a pain. I dumped it and decided to try MSSE, although it doesn't as yet get very good revues from those various antivirus testing groups and companies, it works well enough for me.

I've been using a mix of Avast and MSE. I have a server running WHS and Avast makes a product that works on that OS. I also have it on a few as the server based version communicates well so I know the wife is letting her antivirus definitions update. :) I've been using MSE on my main desktop lately. The last few majors updates to Avast have made it unusable out of the box..it's a very needy antivirus. Lots to click and think about. It just wasn't worth changing all the buried settings. MSE has been working fine for me. Behavior is 95% of not getting infected anyway, so any detection difference is not as important as it might sound. Not to mention, most viruses you'll get infected with were released too new to be in anyone's update. But, I do understand folks using each of them as needed. No idea about the comment about IE and MSE. They're entirely different products.

Okay, I'll try MSE again, just hope it does not keep telling me I'm not protected and need to run a scan when I will have it set to do so weekly.

    Thanks

If you do get a message.... just run the quick scan manually and the message will disappear.

I have mine set to scan on Sunday mornings, but this week it missed due to not being on at the time, so I got the message. Just do as Starbuck said and run one manually, in quick scan mode it will quietly get on with it in the background, while you are doing something else. Once it has done so, unlike other AV's it doesn't nag that it found nothing. It will only allert you if it does find something.

Thanks. I unchecked the box that said run only if computer is idle (something to that effect may not be exactly what was shown). This may have been my problem, time will tell. I also was seeing Avast start to act differently. Revo found a bunch of items even after it had apparently been uninstalled.

    Thanks

No (and I literally mean no) antivirus will completely uninstall itself. You'll want to run the corresponding removal utility. Each antivirus has its own. See here for Avast's:

That is why I have Revo Uninstaller on my machine. Works well with other programs one uninstalls as well, I use the strongest option an it always finds items that have been left behind and gets rid of them. Only one it has not been able to handle has been MSE an for that I go to the Microsoft Site.

    Thanks

I have used Revo a dozen times to completely remove MSE from computers without an issue.
Maybe you didn't stop MSE in config first.

I previously used Microsoft OneCare, which has now been replaced and branded MSE.

I use Revo all the time, but I would still run the antivirus removal tool. Revo has to search, whereas the antivirus removal tools know exactly what they are looking for.

I must say of all the ones I have tried over the years MSE appears to be the easiest. Let's hope it does not go the way the others have and become bloated and or cumbersome.

    Thanks

Well no matter what I try MSE keeps wanting me to do a scan on very frequent bases. This is unacceptable to me an thus once again MSE has been uninstalled from my machine. I will try Avira (FREE) again.

    Thanks

Aggggggg Avira has done gone an become bloated, slows down ones machine. Looks as if I'll have to deal with MSE after all unless some one knows of another Free virus program that is not a resource hog an does a good job.

    Thanks

FIW, I use MSSE without incident. My desktop stays on 24/7 and MSSE runs entirely on it's own. I have the same issue with MSSE on my notebook that I use infrequently.
