Yes and No, Yes you do need it and it's installed by software and different programs that need it, but I'm sure you don't need that many copies of the same versions, I had a similar problem and removed some, the wrong copies, then decided to just remove the lot, and then had to re-install any software that uses it, however I now only have 2 copies of each.

But before you go removing them all, and getting into the same mess I did, I'd wait to see what our more experienced tech's have to say

My understanding of these run time libraries is different programs require different .DLL's to run and some even are shared.
They install side by side in the WinSxS folder and the application picks the version it needs to run.
I remember vaguely I was advised not to remove any of these a long time ago.
My advice is don't remove any because some installed programs may stop running.
Hope one of our Tech Specialists can clarify this.

It all depends if you are just using one SQL server or multiple, from some of the redistributals you are using or have used
    SQL 2005, 2008, 2010
they wont cause any harm being there, so unless you have a specific reasons for wanting them gone I would leave them

I had a conversation with someone today about this and felt like a right numpty :bnghd:

Question how do you tell which program installed which version?

answer :- left click on the install date, at the top, this arranges the list of programs by the date they are installed on, ascending or descending your choice, once this is done they will be next to the program that installed them, as they were both installed on the same date, if they are not next to a program installed on the same date, they're probably not needed, and just left over from the original program being UN-installed.

 obvious when you think about it.

P.S. your allowed not to know the answer, however myself, well it didn't do my tech credit any favours.
