When I cut files from a camera SD card and move them to a hard drive folder, the files all become locked. When I go to PhotoShop and browse the files, I can not delete them or move them to another folder (except as copies) because they are locked. ???? Help, please.

Hi Ketaoink, and welcome to Computer Help Forums...

From memory windows has a maximum file path length of 256 characters. So if you where to place files in a folder that was inside another folder and so on....

In the example below I had taken a picture while on holiday in Spain, and then transferred the image from my camera to my computer. The image is named The villa and is in a folder named Spain which in turn is in a folder named Holiday 2012, and that is in the Pictures folder.

    EXAMPLE: C:\Users\PseFrank\Pictures\Holiday 2012\Spain\The villa

In the example, the file path has a length of 55 characters. But.....If my pic of the villa I stayed in was housed in a folder that was inside many folders who due to the length of the folder names, and or the file name its self exceeded 256 characters, then my image of the villa would effectively be out of reach to me....I wouldn't be able to copy it, open it, or do anything at all with it.

If that was the case then to enable access to my pic I would have to shorten the names of the other folders to a point where the total file path characters was below the 256 character limit.

For example I could shorten Holiday 2012 to Hols 2012, and so on and so forth. And then try for access to my pic.

The above may not be the cause of the problem you have. But in any case could you tell us where in your folder structure you have placed the images you are having problems with.

Having just read your original post again. I have another question.

Are you using the Photoshop Organizer?

If you are, then I would suggest that when downloading images from your camera you first of all place a copy of them in your Pictures folder. I have known a few people that have had problems with the Photoshop Organizer.

    One other point as well...

There are many computer users that use the Copy command when moving files...and then delete the files from the original folder or drive. It has been known for files to be lost in limbo when just using the Cut command, although I must admit that has never happened to me personally.

Further to the good advice above I am thinking of dropping the UAC to zero.
I know UAC plays havoc with some files and not others.

Also you could try File unlocker. Very easy to use.
