Laptop sharing printer on network

    I would say that it is possible to print from a printer connected to another machine on the same network. But to do this, it is not a case of installing drivers as such, it is enabling the printer to be shared. It is easily done from XP -XP and from Vista- Vista but from XP - Vista it can be a long hard task to get it working correctly

    I am waiting for Bob12a to tell us if he can actually see the hard wired computer from his laptop or if he just set up the network to use the printer.

    Sorry, after reading the rest of the thread, it seems that sharing the printer was advised. I have ot leave now for a lecture but when I return, if it has not been resolved I will post more with hopefully, instructions to solve the problem :) or to troubleshoot it and get more info if needed.

    If I am correct, I believe that he can see it from his laptop but as he hasnt connected them, or shared the orinter, his laptop is unable to communicate with his laptop, only the XP machine it is connected to. But I maybe wrong, best wait and see.

    After 41 posts on this subject I am sorry for wasting time I should have read the specs on the printer then I would have known I could not post wirelessly from my lappy.

    Interfaces/Ports:
    1 x Type B USB 2.0 - USB
    1 x Type A - PictBridge

    Atleast I have learned a lot more of what goes under the hood

    If your laptop connects wirelessly to the network then their should be no eason why the laptop should not be able to use the printer across the network,

    I think what might be an Idea is to connect the printer by cable to the laptop and make sure that the laptop can print and has the right drivers installed.

    If the Laptop can print hard wired then we know we have a network problem

    and as for wasting time stop being daft, we should be appologising for not getting it sorted in 3 posts

    I agree with Match, you will need the XP drivers installed on the XP machine for the printer.
    and you will need the vista drivers from the lappy.

    The fact that the Printer is connected to the XP machine makes no odds other than Vista is not as refined at finding printers as XP is.

    I have now tried that and the laptop will NOT print hardwired I have reinstalled from scratch I cannot find vista 32 drivers for PIXMA IP3600 they are not on the installation disk nor can I get them from Canon they only have the 64 driver.

    sorry I should have thought of that myself

    A far less complicated solution than using a network to print. When you are in the market for a new printer, the wifi enabled ones have come down in price considerably. I just bought a HP all in one for less that $100.00 and I am sure Stirling prices will not be that different. Around here it seems that the same printer without wifi costs about $20.00 less.

    Thanks I will know next time I have just bought the Canon last month pleased with the printer but as you say no wifi
