That is never the case Bob. You are a valued member and never considered anyone who would waste our time.

I would like to know if you are using a wireless connection to communicate between the laptop and the printer.

    Bob,

Using the above method I mentioned - can you complete to the end on the Vista lappy and see the printer?

There are some differences with XP and Vista in terms of setting up printers - see if the below helps Bob

Download the Windows Vista printer driver for your printer.

Install the driver on your Windows Vista computer. During installation, you’ll be prompted to connect the printer to your computer. Choose the option to proceed with installation without connecting the printer. (as yours is already connected on XP machine)

After installation completes, open the Printers applet from the Windows Vista Control Panel.
Right-click on the new printer and choose Properties.
    Go to the Ports tab.
Click Add Port…, select Local Port, then click New Port…
For the port name, enter exactly the network path and share name of your printer (e.g. \\RECEPTION\Samsung SCX-4×16 Series).
Click OK, and double-check that this new port is selected with the checkbox next to it.
Click OK to close the printer properties.

The issue seems to be with the communication rather than the way it is set up. The printer needs to recognise your wireless network which means its name (SSID) that is the one that you see that you are connected to. And it will also need to recognize your security settings. (WEP, WPA and the key) Your printer software should allow you to "add a device" if it is HP and you need to add a wireless device to it following instructions on a wizard.

Of course this assumes a wifi capable printer. :)

I may not have been clear in my last post. What you have done is basically set up your printer so that it will obey commands from any computer on the network. OK so far.

If you do not set your wireless connection properly the printer will not get the signal regardless of the printer network. It is the same as setting up a proper network and then removing the USB connection.

Now I expect Dalo to tell me I getting it wrong or I am misunderstanding. :D

From a quick google it does not appear to be. There would be a wifi button on it if it were and as I noted you would have had to give it your wireless network settings (meaning the ones you use to connect to the router and internet)

BeeCeeBee is exactly right the issue is that XP is very different in the ways it works to Vista.
As you have set up the printer on the XP machine, its not as simple to try and get the Vista machine to access it

from How to Share Printer in Windows XP

If the other users using different version of Windows to access your printer, they will need to install printer driver themselves. You can help by installing additional printer drivers on your Windows XP, so that the printer driver will be installed when other users access the shared printer with different version of Windows. Click Additional Drivers, tick additional driver you would like to install. You will be prompted to install those additional drivers after clicking OK.

I am afraid that this discussion is going in a direction that will confuse the member. The bottom line is that he was attempting to send a print command from a wireless wifi card in his laptop to a printer that needs to be hard wired (USB.)

Reading the first post, it looks like he has a printer that's hard wire connected to and being shared off his XP machine. With his laptop running Vista, he can see the shared printer but can't print to it. So the Vista machine can see the printer but can't print to it. I think this is because he needs to load the Vista drivers for the printer.

In post 25 Bob acknowledged that he was trying to communicate with the printer over a wireless connection. But the printer is not wifi enabled.

Everything that that is being said is true except that there is no indication that the member can "see the printer." All he can do is enter commands on his printer using the installed software. That is why it refuses to print a test page.

If I am missing something please let me know.

This is what leads me to believe he can see the printer from his Vista laptop.

    from post #1 he says
    from post #10 he says

You know dragnet I missed that but, still, I don't see how it is possible. The printer has no wireless capability and the laptop is wireless.

The printer is hard wired to the XP machine. The XP machine is sharing it on the network. Any machine capable of seeing the XP machine should be able to print to the shared printer. I think the problem is that the Vista drivers for the printer aren't loaded.
