Hi Wyrmsson, welcome to Computer help Forums.

When you see the "HARDDISK SECURITY" text/box, are you then asked to input a password? If so, then this is a bios password.

Are you able to get into the bios? And how long have you owned the laptop?

Let me add to what PseFrank has just posted. If you are receiving that message the very next thing you will get if you select enter is to enter a password you can try leaving it blank. It may be just a glitch. On the other hand if it still requires a password we simply cannot (actually will not) help you get around that problem. Your bios is blocking access to the drive because someone has password protected it.

If it is a newish machine go back to the place of purchase and see if they did that themselves. There are some retailers that actually do that so you will have to return the machine to them for repair. Personally I consider that practice to be unscrupulous maybe even illegal.

We however, have a very specific rule about helping members bypass passwords. Most reputable forums will have the same.

no password is asked for i hit esc button and it allowed me to boot from disk
install of operatting system started and got to collecting information part of install and now it is saying
This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computers' bios
    when click next i get
windows is unable to find a system volume that meets its criteria for installation
So im back to square one and lost again

I think Windows can't find the right partition to boot to.
    Try This.

When the loading bar reaches 100% completion, hold F8 key down, you should see a menu
much like the extended boot menu of a windows OS like safe mode boot options.
Let go of F8 key and look for an option near the bottom labeled
"Debugging Mode." Select it and from there the installation should continue as normal, and you should be able to choose the correct partition and continue.

this issue normally happens when you try and `write` to the disk and write protection is turned on in the bios.
I assume as its Vista the disk is a SATA? did the disk that the OS is on come with the laptop or is this another version of the OS disk, when laptop manufacturers ship the device they streamline any awkward device drivers straight onto the OS disk to save you having to mess around, if you are using a Vista disk from another system or the system previously ran XP and its an IDE drive then you are going to need the SATA controller drivers and install them within the XP install or run the SATA disk in compatibility mode within the BIOS

Let us know some additional info and we can help more
