    Hi All,

I've had a sony Viao laptop for about 5 months, it runs windows 7. I turned it on yesterday and it stuck on the windows launch window before the prompt, Everytime I now start it I get the message on a black screen..

"Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.

If Windows files have been damaged or configured incorrectly, startup repair can help diagnose and fix the problem. "

I then have two options, either start windows repair or launch normaly. When I choose either options though, Windows launches and then freezes on the blue screen before the login appears. I can move the mouse but there's nothing there apart from the blue screen.

I've tried starting it with the restore disk in and either choosing the Vaio repair centre or launching the repair windows 7 options (including trying to get it to run in safe mode, safe mode with command prompt and last known working configuration), and Ive tried pressing f8 on startup and choosing repair your computer but whatever I choose I get the blue (or black when I try to start it in safe mode) screen with a mouse I can use but nothing else. Can't seem to do anything with it.......

I hadn't installed anything new from what I could remember.

Any ideas?!? Any help much appreciated as my limited knowledge is all used up

    Thanks!

Have you tried the last good configuration in the advanced options page (The black page with the options.)

If you can get into safe mode at all we would have you disable the automatic restart that occurs when you get the BSOD. Otherwise try to get the hex code that appears on the screen. It is the error code with a bunch of zeros. Don't bother to try to count the zeros and concentrate on any series of numbers or letters that may appear.

Thanks BeeCeeBee - In the Windows boot manager I get the status code 0xc00000e9 - does this mean anything to you?

    Welcome to CHF Robo,

Is this the exact message you are getting?

You don't by any chance use a registry cleaner, do you?

Here's a description of the possible problem .....

    The Registry

All the data (information) Windows needs to start up and function properly are stored in a special data file called the
System Registry. If the registry file is missing, or corrupt (meaning that something was either changed or added incorrectly),
Windows will stop functioning properly, or in this case, to stop loading altogether.

    The Cause

A missing or corrupt registry can have various causes:

    - An accidental writing error by the computer.

This can just be a glitch, but can also happen if the computer loses power before it has time to shutdown properly.

    - The installation of a badly written program.

This could be a program you installed, or even an automatic update via the internet.

    - Contamination by a computer virus.
(This could have been hidden in something that was downloaded from the internet).

    (Lastly - A bad/worn out hard drive. )

Thanks All Heart, yes that's the message. I agree it's probably something to do with the registry. I insert my recovery disk, choose my language but after this it freezes on the blue windows screen. There's nothing on there apart from a mouse I can move but no icons, boxes etc. The computer doesn't access the HDD (the light doesn't flash). Is there a way to repair the registry without reinstalling windows when it freezes at this point?

    Any help mucy apreciated!

Is the hard drive "seen" in the BIOS?

To clarify, you are unable to access the System Recovery Options window when
using the startup repair disk? The issues you are having seem to indicate a faulty
or failing hard drive. I suggest running a disk check using the command prompt if
you are even able to reach that window. The command is (chkdsk /r) without the
    parentheses.
    Note:
There is a space between the chkdsk and the forward slash.

Hi, just further to Allhearts excellent advice so far, I remember you saying you have only had this laptop for 5 months, was this from brand new? I agree with Allheart that it is now looking like a faulty hard drive, so it should still be covered by the warranty if it was brand new when you bought it. By all means try the checkdisk functions if you can get that work, but if not I would recommend sending it back under warranty.
