The conventional advice for calibrating a battery is basically the same as the manual procedure explained in SpywareDr's link- fully discharge the battery and then recharge to 100% while not booting up. Did that when the replacement was installed, just now started the procedure again for the heckuvit. Outcome to be determined...

The BIOS does NOT require any Operating System (such as Windows or Linux) in order to operate.

In that case, the laptop in question (Acer) does not support either procedure in your link. BIOS has no options for battery manipulation. I assumed it was due to the OS because the BIOS refers to Mate, which is the version of Mint we are using. Perhaps that is not OS- related.

Sorry to hear that. The BIOS battery calibration routine works well on new|replacements batteries.

We own two Acer netbooks. They also don't have a thing in the BIOS about battery calibration. I calibrated the battery when new as explained in the Acer manual. (Yes, I'm one of the minority that reads the manual and makes sure the laptop is fully charged when new before I power it up.)
I had to buy a replacement battery in 2017 for one (2011) and I followed the directions that came with that Duracell replacement battery.
The replacement has a slight glitch which we've learned to live with. From time to time the battery light will flash orange when the adapter is plugged in and if you hover over the icon it reads "plugged in, not charging". We discovered that if we unplug the adapter and allow the % to drop below 90% then plug it in again, the light stops blinking and it will start to charge. We haven't discovered any sort of pattern when this will occur.

I'm (usually) in that same minority, including on this occasion. Went back to recheck battery installation- I did their procedure with both the new replacement and the replacement of the replacement, currently on duty. Too soon to say what the outcome is.

Do you recall- was your replacement battery stone cold dead on receipt?

No. I didn't order it through the mail. I went to the Battery + Bulbs store and picked it up there. They put it into my Acer laptop and tested it before I left the store. I don't remember what the charge % was but we came home, plugged it in and left it fully charge after which I followed the directions on the instructions that came in the package.
(I did keep the old, useless battery just in case. I don't like the battery bay empty because I worry about dust getting on the exposed battery contacts.)

Both of our batteries, from Acer, arrived stone cold dead, zero charge. Tony seemed to think that was unusual. We'll see how it goes.

I order and replace about 1 battery a week, but have never ordered one direct from the manufacturer. With that said, I've never received one that had zero charge. I'd say the average charge I see is about 40%.

For future reference- where do you buy your batteries? If this second replacement turns out to be a dud also, I plan to buy one with more capacity.

I'm in Canada. I get the batteries through Amazon Prime from a Canadian Distributer called BattPit. I believe their parent company is the international company called BattDepot:

Thanks for posting. Have you had good results with these batteries?

I buy other types of batteries here https://www.batterywarehouse.net/ (watch batteries and button batteries for other devices)
Fortunately there is one about 30 minutes away. When I went for a battery for my Acer, they didn't have it and told me I'd have to search online.
You could call (1-800 number) and inquire about a battery for your model.

Belated update- on this advice, we bought a battery directly from BattDepot several weeks ago- opted for the 6600mAh. This battery has worked great, haven't really tracked runtime exactly, but a charge lasts several hours, easily as good as or even better than the original. And the fact that it is physically larger than the original and protrudes from the case a little is actually a plus, as it elevates the rear of the machine and provides a more comfortable angle for typing.

    Thanks for the tip!
