Saw forum with Java discussion and installed it on W7. When I go to control panel / Java it still shows the same Windows 7 Java version 1.7. Where do I look to verify that Java 8upd51 is installed?
And is it OK to install it on XP even though says not supported?

    try www.java.com/verify

As far as installing it on your XP machine, I have it on mine which I use most of the time. If you're worried about it, just install Java. It's not needed for many sites.

But on 7, where do I go to see that the new version is in fact installed? Doesnt show it in control panel Java tab.
Im not worried. Plan to install it for I do have sites that say Java must be enabled.

The present Java version will always be shown in the add/remove folder.
Always remove any earlier versions before installing the latest version.

You could install it, but as it's not supported..... there may be problems or it may not work.
In other words... there's no guarantee with it.

    On a side note:
2 of my systems have never had Java installed and I've never noticed any problems with any site.

W-7 PC CPL>Java doesnt say new version, but D/L said successfully installed. XP D/L and installed, said successflul, and CPL>Java>About DID say new version but I didnt yet uninstall previous. I am not positive I NEED java but do recall one website I was having trouble with and it gave notice "JAVA MUST BE ENABLED TO ACCESS THIS SITE". Forgot which site that was.Other than that have no recollection of trouble because of old version or not being enabled. Will try to uninstall old ones anyway and decide if want to install a new one.

You don't check for other Java versions in the Java App. (Start >> Control Panel >> Java)

    As i mentioned early:
Start >> Control Panel >> Programs and Features.

    Btw:
    Java has been updated again........
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 8 Update 60

I see that now. I removed any java from XP and 7. XP Installed fine. 7 must not have but retrying after removed old versions. Guess if I succeed with 51 I can try 60.
