Java wanted to update. I did. Then it said Java does not work with 64 bit. Do I just forget Java and updating or is there something else I need?

Some people don't even install Java because of security concerns.

If you want to update Java, go directly to www.Java.com. It'll detect the browser you're using and provide the appropriate version.

    Hi BGBG,

You may have got that slightly wrong.
The latest version is Java SE Runtime Environment 9.0.4 ... the download page shows download for X64, but no download for 32bit systems.
Check my tutorial here..... Latest version of Java

    Tony is right.
I don't have Java installed on any of my systems and have never had any problems on any sites.

Never thought about what Java is or does. Just updated when it asked. Maybe don't even need or want it.

As Tony D said, update via the Java WEB site, DO NOT USE the [Update] that pops up nor the feature in Control Panel. The Java people do not have a feature to recognize your OS as 32 vs 64 bit, and download the applicable version (dumb, really dumb).

I removed Java from the XP 32bit laptop. The Windows 7 64bit say it has Java jre1.8.0_161. Not even sure whether I need it or not. Read the explanatory information but mostly just more confusing. I am using the Firefox browsers and there seems to be some issue with those.

Firefox doesn't need Java. I do not have it on any computer in the house. At one time the "excel-like" part of Open Office required it. It no longer does. MS Office doesn't need it and WordPerfect Suite doesn't need it. I have both installed on my husband's desktop computer and no java.

Don't confuse Java with javascript. They are completely different things. Java is Oracle; javascript is Adobe and gets updated at minimum every patch Tuesday.
