I have placed this here because the entire point is to avoid malware while still running everything that we need.

I think it would be a good idea for someone (perhaps Starbuck?) toe lay out what versions of Java, Flashplayers, shockwave etc we should be using and what needs to be removed and avoided. I know I have lost track of the various security alerts and would love to be able to see a list of what we should have installed and what should be eliminated.

    Nice idea BeeCeeBee,

I'll draw up a post tomorrow with the latest versions, links etc and some other guidelines.

Thank you, I think that would be a great service! Of course I don't need it :snckr: but others may! (OK I'm lying.)

    Great Idea! :)

It has always been troublesome to keep up with the latest versions, get rid of old versions, and avoid malware advisories.

I have always had Sun Java and Adobe Flash Player without issues. :)

Can we please wait for Starbuck to reply. The issue is not the programs but security issues related to different versions and some fakes. Thank you!

This could be a little more complicated than i first thought.
Exactly what are we trying to achieve?
    Is it ....
    • The correct versions at this given time
    • The correct procedure for installing them
    • The correct download site
    • Warnings about some of these programs trying to install toolbars etc .... which are not necessary to us, but help the developers pull in revenue
    • Warnings about vulnerabilities found in versions and the update required to deal with this
    • Whether the older version needs to be removed before updating
    • Whether it's best to place faith in the auto update procedure built into the programs
Obviously it may be awkward to address all this in the one thread.... (security updates being one thing that springs to mind)

This topic is a good idea and it needs to be done properly, so my idea at the moment is to get as much feedback as we can and then get something posted that is going to be easily read, easy to follow, but more importantly .... a great source of security info for the members.
As it's for the benefit of all the members, it would be good to get as much feedback on this as we can.
We can then set out the post giving the info that is required.
The thread could then be cleaned up at the end and all 'not required' posts removed to give continuity.
    How does that sound?

when you put it like that it does seem kinda complicated, i mean the list could go on & on, so i think it would be best to keep it short and sweet by concentrating on say the programs that BeeCeeBee mentioned and maybe a couple more but choosing the most recommended with safest security risks/flaws etc and most practical for everyday use if you like.

and the best way these are to updated and where to be updated.

as you mentioned about the little annoying extra's like toolbars/weather bugs etc could be mentioned but then again these things change quite often when they release anewer program or update, and then sometime they are difficult to spot for the average user.......... however, there are very easy to uninstall.

if possible it would be good to get a sort of practicality list, like which program would suite joe bloggs, "do you really need this this program" type of thing and listing alternatives.

This list could just go on so there would need to be a line drawn under it at some point unless its going to be some sort of blog about do's/don't/ etc.... what type of pc user would this be targeting, basic ovice/experienced.......

or am i just going way off base here?

I think we're on the same wavelength here.
The topic could be quite lengthy ..... so what do we include and where do we draw the line.

In thinking about it, I guess I opened up a can of worms. My point is that we seem to be inundated with security vulnerabilities and some seem related to things in common usage but often misunderstood. Joking aside, I know how to make sure what constitutes a genuine update but others do not. I guess the real issue is a single common sense means of making sure that a member is not subjecting themselves to any rogues that appear as updates.

The one issue that seems to creep up from time to time is Java and another the adobe product line in general.

So the thread is more about the vulnerabilities and security loop holes that appear in the programs and not about how or where to install them from?
