I had the privilege of visiting Japan a couple of years ago. We stayed in Osaka - which escaped the worst of the earthquake and subsequent tsunami.
The Japanese people are very kind, respectful people.
The problems they are having are very sad - and worrying. The nuclear power station is still looking a very grave danger.

I am surprised that there has not been an appeal - considering that the disaster has been so catastrophic.

The British Red Cross however, are accepting donations specifically for this disaster.

Just a little pause for thought, I was shocked, and stunned by this disaster, but the other day while in a hospital, visiting that is, an old guy watching about it on the news commented " Ha that's judgement on them, they deserve that and more, for what they done in the war"

At first I was more shocked by his comment than the images of the devastation on the TV, I was then even stunned more when another couple of old people on the ward agreed with him !!

Obviously I have no first hand knowledge about the events and people involved in WWII, but I'm at a loss as to pity those who have carried so much hatred for so long, KenB's comment shows that things change, people change, Idea's and beliefs change, but it would seem that the Human capacity for hatred and vengeance can at times out weigh our capacity for compassion and forgiveness.

But the bottom line to me is would half or or the countries governments offering aid (Not Including Charities) be so willing and generous if it were not for the economic consequences that will be felt globally from this disaster?

Interesting post, Match. In my case I am one of the few here who was actually alive during WWII although I was a bit young to remember it. (Born 2 months before DDay. ) It was as much a part of my growing up as as 9/11 is, and will continue to be, to a child born in 2000.

While the manner that the Japanese waged war was appalling in some instances but no people ever payed a higher price than they did in August of 1945. In fact no people ever learned the price of an unjustified war more dramatically.

The hatred for acts of cruelty and barbarism should never end. The lessons of the holocaust need to be replayed over and over again "lest we forget". The war itself however does not belong to my generation and and certainly not to that of many, if not most, of our members. Otherwise, perhaps we should be hating the Spanish for the inquisition or the Italians for the sins of Rome.

Find me real war criminals or holocaust participants and I have no problem either hating them or punishing them. (No matter what their age. as some acts are ageless.) But it is time to come to grips with the fact that they are mostly dead and facing a far greater punishment than we can ever mete out.

As for the horrible crisis facing Japan it is simply that; Horrible. These people need our help and support and we should be giving it, they have done nothing to have it withheld.
