Last week i purchased a new ACER Aspire Laptop with Windows 7 (Used to use a Compaq laptop with Windows XP)

However along with my laptop i purchased a new HP printer and it wont let me install the printer drivers, Everytime i attempt to install the drivers it simply says Unable to complete task.

I also tried to install photoshop and a free document viewer that it supposed to allow me to read word doc's (Only until i can afford to buy a new version of office as my last version is microsoft office xp) and the same happens when trying to install those.

So basiclly i need to know if there is something simple i am forgetting to do or is there any help i need to get.

    Many thanks

    Pamela

Hi Pamela and welcome to CHF

What is the model number of your HP printer ?

Regarding reading Word docs ............ Have you tried Open Office ? ( it is free )
    http://www.openoffice.org/

Is the laptop functioning OK apart from what you have outlined ?

Which AntiVirus are you using ?

Hi Pamela, and welcome to Computer Help Forums..

In addition to what Ken has said above, is your operating system 64Bit or 32Bit? To find this out click Start > Right click Computer > Select Properties. It will tell you in the window that opens. (About half way down the page)

This combined with the information that Ken has asked for may help us track down the correct drivers for your laptop.

    Hi guys

the printer is HP Deskjet 2050a j510 series (Which apparently is suitable for windows XP, Vista, and windows 7

Apart from these problems, my laptop seems to be functioning fine.

I am using McAfee Antivirus at the moment, but thats only because i have been unsucessful in the past in being able to remove completely an anti virus package without being told to download updates etc. My old computer i was using AVG

My laptop is a 64bit operating system (Honestly dont know what that means)

Will give openoffice a try now to, thanks guys, your help is much appreciated.

    Hi again Pamela...

The link I have provided below will help you download all of the software and drivers needed for your printer. Just click on the link, and when the window opens...click Download. (It is FREE)
You will not have to use the disk that came with your printer.

    Notes:
    • Before installing: Disconnect your new printer from your computer.
    • Before installing: Uninstall any and all software connected with your new printer.

With regards to your Antivirus software, and any other programs that you want to uninstall. Many of the members and staff here use a free program called Revo Uninstaller to carry out this task. (See link below)

    http://download.cnet...4-10687648.html

Note: Cnet is a safe site...but be careful to uncheck/untick any boxes that are offering Toolbars or Browsers, etc, when downloading and or installing software from the site.

Revo Uninstaller is fairly easy to use. Just open the program and highlight the icon of the program you wish to uninstall...and then click Uninstall from the Options bar at the top. Follow the instructions given.
Note: Once a programs own uninstaller has run, If you are asked to restart your computer, click to restart later. Let Revo carry on, and delete all the files it finds.

If you have any problems please post back and ask..

PS/Edit...Don't forget to download and install another Antivirus program. Popular choices are...
    • Microsoft Security Essentials
    • Avast (Free version)
    • Avira (Free version)

Hi, it strikes me that perhaps the entire Windows 7 operating system may not have been installed correctly if the Windows installer is not working correctly or fully, even though Revo has obviously installed and maybe other software as well.

There may be a repair option to take that may fix that, but not really my forte, so best to hang on in case anyone else has idea's first.

In the mean time can you answer this please. When you first started your computer did you see any prompts to make a system restore or repair disk, if so did you make one?

Further to the good advice given so far if the Laptop came with Windows7 x64 already installed,
and only a week old it should be possible to RMA the Laptop.
    I think it's a bad OS install.
    I would be contacting Acer.

Very good point there DSTM, I hope you bought both the laptop and the printer from the same dealer, and also locally, so you can go in person with the laptop and at least take the original disks that came with the printer if not the printer itself. Both will definitely be under warranty and should be either sorted by repair, or better a full exchange of the laptop.

The problem I see here Pam is compatibility to the new operating system because now the operating system your using now is Windows 7 from the older operating system Windows XP and all the software that you used to use is compatible with XP, why not try finding an updated version of the software that you like and one that is compatible with Windows 7...
