Is this practice Legal?

    I didn't miss the point Match.

    There are two reasons it may not work, one it may not accept a valid license key on installation, and two if it does, and this was your case, you may have to generate a new Installation ID and call the 'Master' of Windows.

    The point I made is that the PID defines which type of key is accepted on installation. Retail and OEM PID of XP Home/Pro are different, as is Volume XP Pro and that transposing the keys and versions does not work. In your case that still leaves me confused.

    I think it is important to note that it can make a difference if you use the wrong disk - even OEM disks. For exmaple HP's, if you use an OEM CD and rebuild an HP with the correct CD Key it won't activate. Dell OEM CD's are branded as another example.

    I do think Microsofts 'way' of doing things, although considered draconion by some, does make things crystal clear and prevents problems occurring for non PC experts doing a rebuild.
