It's hard to imagine the Apple iPhone getting any hotter

It's hard to imagine the Apple iPhone getting any hotter, but a report out of Brazil says that an iPhone 4 short-circuited and burned up next to an owner's bed. "At dawn, I woke up seconds before witnessed the burning of my iPhone when I saw a lot of sparks and black smoke out of the cell. My room was impregnated with an unbearable smell of smoke! At that moment, I turned off the power switch in the room to remove the phone from the outlet. Soon after, I opened the windows of the room and turned on the fan to remove smoke."

The user is said to have bought the device in France and was trying to figure out who to approach about the situation. Mashable notes that buying an iPhone in Brazil is very expensive, with an 8GB iPhone 4 going for $900, without data plan.
The incident preceded by three days a report by Australian airline Regional Express that an iPhone onboard one of its flights began glowing red and smoking, forcing airline personnel to extinguish the device.
Apple has not responded to inquiries from various bloggers regarding incidents.

Apple iPhone 4 "Self-Combusts" on Airplane

The reason why the iPhone belched smoke and glowed red is under investigation.

In what appears to be a one-off incident and not a general manufacturing flaw, a passenger's iPhone 4 "self-combusted" on an Australian flight last Friday, according to an airline press release

The iPhone started belching smoke and glowing red (like HAL's eye) after Regional Express flight ZL319 from Lismore to Sydney landed. A flight attendant quickly extinguished the mysterious red glow, and no one was harmed.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is investigating the incident and hasn't yet released the definitive cause of the smartphone's malfunction. However, Mashable spoke to an Apple product service specialist, who said it was "plausibly caused by a combination of a defect in the battery cell with a failure in the phone's battery-temperature management system."

Since this appears to be a freak accident, not a recurring defect, don't chuck your iPhone or demand a massive recall along the lines of the first-gen iPod Nano yet.
