Time-Warner's default DNS was running when it locked up again. First time that has happened.
Will be looking for OTHER causes not related to the DNS settings.

Not sure where to look, but will give it a shot.

Have dumped that odd firewall from Denmark that I mentioned early on.
Zone Alarm does still offer ZA 7 series that runs on 2000 Pro SP4, so have replaced R-Firewall with ZA 7.0.483.

I have the gut feeling that R-Firewall was causing the issues, since it was the unknown in all of this, and was knotty from the start. Tomorrow will tell the tale.

Have returned to using OpenDNS, as well.

    11 hours and running great.
Will un-install the secondary LAN card drivers and re-boot to get the first string back again.
I feel confident that I found the cause.... the R-Firewall.

Now I can do the same thing on the Dell laptop, also running a clean install of 2000 Pro SP4.
After that, I can get back to the Vista primary machine fix-up.

Thanks for adding ideas and watching me drown... almost. B)
I know how to swim, obviously!
Nice to have two revitalized 2000 Pro SP4's on my back-up machines.

No problems at all since previous report.

Since removing that nutty firewall and using Zone Alarm, no freeze of the Internet, IE5 or Firefox.
    No shut-down lockup issues, either.

Looks like trial and error worked. My gut has always told me that a well set router along with good AV and malware protection trumps all these firewalls anyway I have always stuck with the plain old windows firewall and never attributed any problems as coming from that..

    Still solid.

Just got a new, free WiFi router with 4 RJ-45 ports, from Micro Center.
Have never understood if there is a hardware firewall with a router, and how that works.

Oh, Windows 2000 Pro does not have a firewall like XP, Vista and 7 do.
Few firewalls support 2000 any longer.
Even the Zone Alarm I am using is the older version.

I am generally staying away from sites that offer 2000 software, as that is where I got that wipe-out folder that killed off the 2000 installation on the next boot. Strictly Twilight Zone stuff.

Am fearful that since Zone Alarm let it in before, it can again.
I have no other firewall choices that I am aware. Not free ones, at least.
