For the past week, my internet connection has been erratic to say the least. My Orange box and router are based downstairs whilst I am situated in our loft.

It normally works fine but this week it's fluctuated. When I go to the first floor bedroom, the speed is fine. Bring it back to my loft, it works quickly then slows down and it's showing I have an internet connection but it doesn't load up Youtube, BBC etc whilst loading up other pages?

My internet connection box says it's on and the connection is fair. So why this difference between one site working and another one not?

I find rebooting the modem/router helps to restore signal strength.

Are you using a USB wireless  adapter ?

These are notorious for dropping the connection - especially the cheaper ones.

Also, have you added any electronic or electro-mechanical devices that may lie in-line between the access point and the system in the loft?  It could be something as simple as a fan.  Anything that produces a magnetic field such as an electric motor can cause interference with a wireless signal.  Believe it or not if you just put up a fluorescent light it could affect the wireless signal.

Also, if your neighbors are close by (I'm thinking apartments), they may have added something that interferes with your wireless network.

Thanks for the responses guys, appreciated.

The internet is back to working order, not a clue how. I do switch off the router for abit, then put it back on which does help.

I do have an electric heatert that I use but I've never found that to be the issue tbh.

Well, all is well for the meantime, thanks for the tips ;)

While it may be the router it could just as easily be your ISP. I know that broadband services fluctuate greatly in the UK but there may be better options available to you. If you are a DSL customer it could also be a problem with your phone line. It is just one of those areas where the questions keep popping up before an actual solution can be found.

Connections are a great thought.  If the wiring is cable check all connections inside and out for corrosion.
