I have a laptop with no OS on it and need to know how to install 98 on it,
there is no floppy drive just a CD drive and I do have a 98 disk.

  2. The 98 installation CD might be bootable. You can try it by inserting the
disk and restarting the laptop. Make sure that the laptop BIOS is set up to
look at the CD drive for a bootable disk.

    Otherwise, go here:
    http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

and download a utility that will allow you to create a bootable CD.

    floppies.

If the laptop was made during or after 2004, you're probably wasting
    your time.

You won't find win-98 drivers for the important components (chipset,
    wifi, graphics).

If the hard drive is easily accessible, I'd remove it and connect it to
another computer and pre-format it and pre-load it with a copy of the
win-98 CD. Copy everything else you can to the drive as well, like
    drivers (assuming they exist).

    MS-DOS Bootable CD Images:
    http://www.bootdisks.us/ms-dos/5/ms-dos-bootable-cd-images.html

    Windows 98 Boot Disks:

  5. The file to download is the utility that allows you to create a bootable CD.
Once you have booted with the CD you can create a bootable hard disk with
drivers for the CD drive, as per the documentation at that site.

Go into the BIOS setup, find "Boot Sequence" and make sure
it is set to "CD, C:". If it isn't, change it and save the new settings.
Then insert the Windows 98 CD and restart the computer. If this
doesn't help, please repost with more information, including the
manufacturer and model of the laptop.

You can buy external floppy drives that plug into a USB port. This
must be a fairly new laptop to be without a floppy drive. All the
older ones had them as far as I know.

UpDate - Re: Install 98 on laptop

Got it installed, I think the problem was the partition needed activated.
I'd never heard of having to activate a partition but after I did it, I was
able to install 98. I downloaded several handy CDs, Ultimate Boot CD and a
boot 98se CD. Alas I think that the laptop is too new as the other poster
said that 98 won't have all the drivers, plus the old problem that I always
seemed to run into was during install, about 20 files were missing and I
ain't tracking em all down plus the 6-8 drivers to operate all the little
things. It was fun but I think now I'll spot the $25 for a restore cd from
emachine and put xp back on. Thanks to all.
