Corsair is adequate and Cooler Master well that one you will regret Dougie. In the meantime there are other things to try first. Does the board have onboard video where you can pull out the video card and see if that will boot up? Please give us the exact model of the motherboard also. On the board you will see a small round watch battery. Gently nudge a small screw driver on the spring lever and the battery will pop out and keep it out for about 5 minutes and then return it to the socket which will reset the bios. And lets see how we do with those 2 things before more ideas.

That suggest video and you mention having the following gpu:
"Gpu is Radeon hd 7079 3 GB i belive" which I know isn't the right number but it suggests you have a pci-x video card and there may also be an onboard video card you can use by removing that card first.
Unfortunately your 2 pictures are no help here.
I need to know the actual numbers from your Asus Motherboard to see if you have that as you don't seem to know what I am talking about. No problem just give me the board model # which is written on the board above the video slot, and also you could use this little program to accurately tell you all the hardware see attachment:

There is a Radeon hd 7079 3 GB card, Rich.
I hope the 6 pin power was hooked up to it otherwise you will have a black screen.

Dougie 7970 is the correct #. I see the board does not have onboard video and I think the video card is the issue. There is a bios upgrade for Pci-x 3.0 that you are probably going to need to do but that isn't this problem. If you don't have another video card to try the only other thing you can do is test that card in another pc or take it to a shop where they can test it. It is either the card or the board and more likley the card.

Yes please keep us posted. I am hoping it is something simple.:)
You have a very good system and fitting a new stronger PSU was a good investment I feel.
The new PSU can handle all power demands. I would be very surprised if the graphics card is cactus.
I am running 7 series radeon cards in two computers and can't fault them.
When the screen went gray first and then black the first thing that comes to mind is the Power supply.

I think it almost has to be the video card and I use a lot of Radeon cards and prefer them to Nvidia but such is computing and anything can happen.

I haven't seen a graphics card go from working and in 2 seconds flat doesn't work anymore.
I have had cards fail but gave notice of their impending demise.
As you say, Rich anything is possible with computers.

Usually when the cpu goes, then nothing at all works, no lights and no fans. Now a defective new cpu would be another story.

The fans normally will run if the CPU goes and you are likely to get a blue screen or coded beeps from the Bios.

For my small contribution, I think his power supply blew out and took out the motherboard.
We won't know till he gets back to us as to what his tech tells him.
