HP Pavilion dv9500 will only boot up if dvd is in drive

HP Pavilion dv9500



when i turn on the laptop i get no operating system found.but if i put the windows 7 dvd in it will boot up, if there,s no dvd in it will just say no operating systen found,

when i go to start then to computer i see Drive 2 c no drive 1????

is there a way to get this to boot up with out the dvd in the drive..


i ran a disk check in commond promp and got

failed to transfer logged messages to the event log status 50

X:\Sources>



i also ran




bootrec.exe /RebuildBcd

The above command will scan all your disks for other operating systems compatible with Windows 7 and allow you to add them to your system's boot list.


and i got total identified windows installations 0



all i get is

disk partition1 drive 2 c




wheres drive 1

 

Hi Pongo. You have posted this problem on many sites and got many posts with advice.
Those threads are still running so best to follow that advice first and see where it leads.

 

thats why i came here so far nothing is helping fix the issue,even if the drive1 is no good should i not be able to get the pc to boot off drive 2.

 

Which drive has the Operating system on?

 

how do i tell,if i turn on the pc with no disk in the drve i get no operating system found.

if i put in the 7 dvd and let it boot up then i go to start and computer it shows Drive 2 c 69.1 gb free of 111gb

 

Just for grinns and giggles try booting with the DVD in the optical and then going to Windows Explorer and right clicking on the Optical drive. Now select to eject.

If the above does not help give us a screen shot of all the drives listed in either Windows Explorer or probably better, Disk Management. You may have inadvertantly set up a virtual drive that relies on the install DVD being present.

 

once the pc boots up i can take the dvd out and surf the web just fine,if thats what your asking.

Hi Pongo.Have you attempted a startup repair?

 

yes it says it can,t repair.

 

if i try and install windows again where it asks me where do you want to install windows it only gives 1 option.

I am confused about the physical setup of this laptop. From what I gather it has a single 320GB hard drive divided into 2 160GB partitions. Additionally, DSTM has noted that you have been posting elsewhere which is fine but you have not told us what advice you have followed. Please just tell us and not post links.

Next we will need to see your Disk Management. Just go the "Computer" right click and select "Manage" and then select disk management from the column on the left. Post a screenshot. (if you do not know how to do that we will help you. I notice that Jaylach asked for this above and you did not respond.

If you have an external drive I would copy everything important to it and then we can simply explore a re installation and format of the entire drive. What disks were supplied with the machine?

 

i have tryed running diskcheck ect from commond promp i have try,ed changing the boot order nothing helps.

if you like i can get a everest report for ya.
i have a windows 7 ultimate dvd

and a burned copy of 7 recovery

i tryed the recovery did not help

That is a bit odd. Have you ever had linux on that computer? You may have to boot and save any data to a an external source, format the entire drive as NTFS and install Windows 7 from scratch but I am not yet ready to tell you to do that until others get a chance to look.

It does seem that more than half your drive has gone missing. You must have something in your optical drive or it would say no media.

Finally it seems as if you have an 8GB removable FAT32 drive attached. Is that a flash drive and what is on it?

I asked whether you had linux on the system?? Is the disk in the optical drive the recovery disk you created? It is not formatted to install it is CDFS. What happens when you put the actual Windows CD in the drive?

What was on the removable drive?

thats how i get the pc to boot up to windows then when im on the home desktop i can remove it and surf the web ect....if i do not have the dvd in the drive then when i turn on the pc i just get no operating system found.

 

I have a few ideas but also some real concerns. Have you ever replaced your hard drive with an SSD?

That is not my concern. I am assuming that the disk that shows up in your first disk management is the Windows 7 disk that you are booting from. Is that correct?

Next, once you boot you can remove the disk and continue to use the Computer is that also correct. I assume it is if you can show a screenshot with the drive empty. Please confirm this information so we can proceed from there.

i tryed to re-install windows and i get this message.

windows could not format a partition on disk 0.The error occured while preparing the partition selected for installation.Error code 0x80070057



since i tryed to reinstall windows now i get missing operating systen even with dvd in the drive.
