How does a work station know which DC is closer?

Doing all this in win2003. I'm just curious. Newbie just trying to
    understand.

    I have a primary DC that's also a DNS1 on IP 192.168.50.1. I created a
second DC at another site with another DNS2 with IP 192.168.50.2.

PDC is replicating to the other DC with no problem. DNS1 is replicating to
DNS2 with no problem. Everything seems to work just fine.

I'm just curious how the people at the PDC know to talk to the PDC first and
the people at the 2nd location know to talk to the SDC first.

I'm guessing it's based on the DNS settings? I have the people at the PDC
using DNS1 as the 1st DNS and the people at SDC using DNS2 as the 1st DNS.

    Am I right?

  3. It uses the DC that is in their own site as determined by the Active
Directory Sites & Services. You have to correctly setup the Subnet Objects
and Site Objects in AD Sites & Services.

A machine is a member of a site based on the IP# that they possess.

  4. Hello pvong" phillip*at*yahoo*dot*com,

The DCLocator process is doing that "job". Also it is important to configure
AD sites and services with the sites and related subnets and move the DC
    to it's belonging site.

See here about the DCLocator process:
    http://blogs.dirteam.com/blogs/jorge/search.aspx?q=locator&p=1

    AD sites and services:
