Yes, a Hotmail account will do it or Windows Live ID.

That's my feeling about Windows 8 too. The traditional Desktop is almost unnecessary for this interface and even gets in the way a bit.

I've managed to pin most things I want to the start screen but a few of the templates I'd made for opening Word and RealDraw Pro documents were a bit reluctant to go there. For instance, on W.7, I had a shortcut in the Start Menu that directly opened headed paper in Word. Also a couple of shortcuts that open A4 landscape and portrait pages in RealDraw Pro. I went into the directories to the templates but there wasn't an option given to pin them to the Start Screen and they didn't show up in 'All apps'.

The answer was to make new shortcuts to them. Where to put the shortcuts to get them to appear though? The solution was to go to the 'All apps' page, right-click on an existing shortcut that was in the category where I wanted the new shortcuts to appear. I chose to go the file location of the shortcut and placed the new shortcuts in the folder there. Then they appeared in the 'All apps' page, then they could be pinned to the Start screen. A bit complicated and if there is a better way I'd be interested to know it. But still, having done it, it is a way of placing less reliance on (or bypassing) the old Desktop.

I agree the Desktop does get in the way.
I find I am continuously using the WinLogo Key.
    I think Windows8 is not 100% perfect.
There are a number of things they could improve on.IMO.

I'm just wondering if anyone has tried using Windows 8 with a touch-screen as their are a number available at quite reasonable prices?

Match, I am in the process of trying to find one locally to hook into this present machine, however the only options available in my local retailers are the full all in one slimline desktops, or some laptops which to me are miles too small. Looks like I will have to bite the bullet and buy online, much as I do not like the idea of not having seen it and tried it first.
Once I get the screen, then I am going for the full Windows 8 rather than the upgrade, as that way I can run dual boot, after all W8 isn't that expensive in comparison to the price of W7.

Just wondering as if I ever get the finances passed by the wife to build a new PC, Win 8 with a touch-screen monitor might be an option, but it's more likely to be Win 9
