So I've brought some homeplugs for a new PC

The devices I have are newlink 200 mbps powerline ethernet adapters model NL-HP200DL.

I'm lead to believe these are plug and play devices. Windows 7 can clearly see something is connected, but can't make a network connection. It's not asking for the homeplug password either.

When loading the PowerPacket utility I get a "Database file is not present" warning and the packet cannot detect the powerplug. It's plugged into the network socket and the light on the socket it lit and I can see that Windows 7 can something is connected.

However, there is no online support for this product, no troubleshooting section in the manual which makes me a little stuck.

    Any thoughts?

Hi mjncardiff. Welcome to Computer Help Forums.net  :)
Being the Weekend, replies may be a little slow.

I would rather leave your issue to a Specialist in that field.

Just ask that you be patient for a short time.Thanks.

I have no experience with these homeplugs but understand what they are supposed to do. I have a few questions as to how you have them set up.

Exactly what are you trying to accomplish with these devices. You say they are connected through the network socket. Is this the network socket on a PC or is it a modem or router port that it is connected to?

The first homeplug needs to be connected to the ethernet output of either your modem or your router. any others are to be placed in a spot where you want the secondary device. These secondary devices should then be attached to the homeplug by way of ethernet cable.

I am guessing that you have plugged in the device and then connected it to a PC and have done the same with another somewhere else. Windows may recognition that something is attached but it is not doing anything that windows can interpret.

Hi mjncardiff and welcome to our Computer Help Forums!

Yipes, having a plug and play that decides to not play is so frustrating (I've got a set of head phones like that) - darn near enough to make one grind the enamel off our teeth - gentle smile.

And while I'm absolutely no help with computer problems, did want to just pop in here to welcome you and reassure that one of our Experts will be zipping in here soon to help with the problem of the power plug not being detected and please feel comfortable enough here to feel free to ask as many questions as needed - each of our Experts are not just willing to help but are ever so patient while doing so.

Do hope you'll also feel comfortable here in any of our various computer sections plus our social area too - again, a happy welcome to you, mjncardiff!

    Mara :)

Hi Mjncardiff and welcome, (I forgot that before.)

Please have a look at post no 3 above. I just think you may have the function wrong.

    thanks for the reponse

Been trying a few things to eliminate possibility. Firstly one homeplug is plugged into the router - the router light is on for that connection suggesting it's ok

Secondly tried a few other connections - machine direct to router etc and that worked fine.

I am only guessing here, but there may be a security issue. The homeplug user manual (which only explains how to use the utility not how to use windows itself) suggests the homeplugs themselves have passwords on them. However, when trying to set up a new network and entering that password it doesn't seem to have any affect.

one further thought - I have a 64-bit operating system.
Anyway to find out if these homeplugs are compatible?

So glad to hear all is well now, mgncardiff - and thanks for being kind enough to let us know!

(Wouldn't it be nice if, when we buy these 'plug and play' things, that the manufactorers would let us know that they don't always literally mean 'plug it in and it will work' and that things like security encryption can cause a snag - aaaargh and grin!).

    :)

Some homeplugs 'mirror' the security that is on the router itself, some do not and you can have issues if they dont match up.

I'm glad that you solved your issue, but if you are using this as a solution for devices that are at a fixed position you may want to consider running a gigabit network, but this depends on the intended usage of the homeplugs
