I have a win7 desktop wired to a netgear router and an XP Pro notebook that connects wirelessly to the web.
I have been trying to network the 2 machines via same name workgroup ( not Homegroup)
and have gotten to the point where the notebook is seen on the network map. However, when I click on the icon for the notebook, a security pop-up appears asking for a user name and password. User name is not a problem, but there are no passwords on either the desktop or the notebook. In fact the only password that exists for hardware is for the router.

I have tried leaving the password blank and/or using the router password, neither work and I am out of ideas.
I really don't want to add passwords to these machines as I am the only user, ever.

    Suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Bill

Hi Bill. BeeCeeBee and other Techies have had more experience than I in this area.
    Ask you to be patient.
In the meantime have a look at previous Networking Threads.
Your answer may well lay there.[IMG]

On the Windows 7 machine go into Control Panel \ All Control Panel Items \ Network and Sharing Center
and click on Change Advanced Sharing Settings. Place a mark next to network, file and printer sharing
and turn on sharing anyone with network access....
Under Advanced Sharing Settings towards the bottom of the list, place a mark next to Turn off password
protected sharing. Save changes and exit.

Thanks allheart but password protected sharing is and was off. I unchecked it, rechecked and rebooted without success. Must be something else that's in the way.
