My company places routers all over the building making the internet publicly accessible/inaccessible as per the need.. I was once in the lobby area and when searching for wlan networks on my mobile, one network named "hidden wlan" was detected upon selecting which i was asked for the name of the network.. I though this was cool and if it was possible to make the wlan at my home router hidden in a similar way so that it is either visible only to the device that i wish to connect it to or make it hidden to the other searches made by someone else...
    any suggestions?

Just log in to your home router, find the wireless settings and click the "Hide SSID" option, apply and restart the access point or router depending on what model you have.
