Since I ran a scan with Avast Antivirus (free version) Most of my files, & Windows are frozen... I can still use Internet Explorer, Surf the net, check my email (Gmail & Comcast)..

Avast is also frozen.. I ran another Full scan yesterday with Windows Defender (no virus) & my windows Firewall is working..

I have to say this is strange...Any ideas as to how to fix this?

    Thank you for any assistance...

Hi Marie. Could you give us some information as to what type of PC and what hardware.
Need to know how much memory you have installed, Please.

I would firstly run CHKDSK and make sure the Hard Drive sectors are OK.

    To run a CHKDSK

    - Click the Start button, and then click on Computer.
    - Right-click the drive that you want to check, and then select Properties.
    - Click on the Tools tab, then under Error-checking, click Check now.

If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

    Hi Marie

if CheckDisk comes up with nothing try a System Restore to a date when your machine was running OK

Start > ...type in .....system restore
    Select an appropriate date.
If Windows suggests a date - you need to ignore this and select your own.

Your files / photos etc will be fine.

Hi Marie. Try Ken's advice first.
I can see what the problem is however I would hope someone more experienced than I can advise a fix for you.
Of 3 GIG 2.75 Gig is unstable which means your OS is not utilizing the available memory correctly.
You have 64Bit OS and it should have no problems.
I have 64 Bit OS on one computer and have no unstable issues with 6 GIGS of Ram.
I have alerted our specialist in this area for you.

I tried to uninstall Avast but it won't uninstall.. So I tried aswclear.. It downloaded ok, but won't open or run...

Boy what a mess this is.. Thank you for your assistance...

I assume you have shut the computer down and rebooted?
If so I am extremely puzzled that Avast has continued to run. It should have closed with a reboot.
However try to close Avast, Click the hidden icons button, the orange Avast circle should be there. Right click on the orange icon and then select "Shields control",= "disable until computer is restarted", Shut down the computer straight away and reboot it.
For your own safety, it would be best to disconnect the computer from the net first.

    Nev.

    Is this a mis-type?
Should it read 2.75GB Usable ?

If so - it could be that the onboard video is using the "missing" 0.25 GB

Don't feel dumb, Marie. We all have senior moments.[IMG]
I read your post on face value.
Good one Ken, picking up the mistake.
I recall a member having similar issues and in their case it turned out a corrupt Video File was causing the problems.
I would Right click on each Video file and Scan separately to eliminate that possibility.

There is a tool that will help determine if there are any missing or corrupt system files. You need to read the short directions that I have taken directly from the Microsoft support page.

Use the System File Checker tool (SFC.exe) to determine which file is causing the issue, and then replace the file. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
    2. Type the following command, and then press ENTER:

sfc /scannow The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

Please give that a try and let us know what happens and what it says if anything. Do not be frightened by the black command box that you will be using (in case you have not seen one before.)

OK well first off the suggestion came from DSTM and I was a bit concerned about the probability that your machine did not come with Windows7 discs. It does appear that the needed repairs were made from the recovery console. If that all seems like gobbldygook it really doesn't matter.

I would stay away from Norton mainly because it will be very difficult to get rid of after the rial if you choose not to pay. Why not just go with Microsoft Security Essentials? It has been quite well received and is free. http://www.microsoft...curity/mse.aspx

I would also consider malwarebytes as additional malware protection. I personally prefer the one time expense of the pro version because of its real time scanning. On the other hand many will suggest that the free version is fine and if MSE is doing its job the real time scanning is not all that important.

Avast is one of the best, I would avoid AVG and Norton at all costs.
where did you get Avast from initially? only ever get the programs from the manufacturers site
I personally ONLY use MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) and I have never had any issues with it, and I have installed it on 100+ machines with no issues either
