just a little question here. My laptop came with vista and dell sent me the free upgrade to winows 7.Is there a way of going back to vista? I got a windows 7 proffessional 64 bit from the college im going to some thing with microsoft where i can download it for free. The windows seven im using now is the home edition 32 bit and when i tried to install the other one it said it wasnt compatible or something of that nature.

do you know if this is an upgrade or a full OEM version?

if its an upgrade it will only upgrade Vista 64Bit Professional to Win7 64Bit Professional.

if its an OEM version you should be able to install it onto one computer. from a clean install

if by some amazing chance its a retail version (Please Please Please tell me how you got it, lol) as it can be installed on any one computer at any one time and provided that it is uninstalled from that computer it can then be installed on another :)

if you are unsure what type it is check with where you got it from and assuming you downloaded it it should be an ISO image so we might be able to find out from the file name (eg. probablylotsoflettersandnumbers.ISO)

I am pretty sure it is OEM version as I get the same at university. I can get a copy of XP, Vista and Windows 7 for free and Win 8 if it comes out whilst I am still studying.

All of mine are full versions, and available to me as I am studying a Computer related course at university. Some colleges offer it also.

The problem you might be seeing, maybe the PC thinks you are trying to just simply replace your upgrade? rather than the whole OS. If that is what you are trying to do.

Are you trying to replace the current OS? Or add this one in as an extra?

Use the recovery DVD's you might have, buy a copy from Dell, or if you are lucky your recovery partition will still work and you can do it from there.

I know there were many issues like yours when W7 was released where they came pre loaded on the PC, you had to contact the company that provided you the PC, tell them you hated W7 and they would ship you a Vista or XP disk, I would give them a call first of all....

(I only know this because I have had 2 dells in my life" There should be a disc, that has the OS on it that came with your dell laptop.. and there should also be one for drivers and utilities. The drivers disk will be grey, the OS disc will be purple or green. If it says Vista on it, reply to us later so we can help further! thanks
