Am using Open Office 3 with my Windows XP and have been having the same problem over and over again.

While working on a document and right-clicking on an image within it, normally I just choose 'save image'. (Sometimes I need to amend my images and to work with them, I need to get them from the document back into my computer itself).

If I do above now, an MS Visual C++Runtime Library window arrives with:
    Runtime Error!
    Program: C:programFiles\OpenOffice.org3\program\soffice.bin
    (and document closes)

Tried updating via 'Help'>Check for Updates and get:
    "Checking for an update failed.
Could not establish Internet connection to the udate30.services.openoffice.org

Have tried about using both FireFox and Internet Explorer with the same result.

Thanks again for the computer help that is so often given to me - really do appreciate it!

How long have you been using open office, Mara? Have you had this problem from the beginning or has it just popped up?

Do you have any microsoft office programs that you can check it against? I am not an open office user but I don't like the way that sounds.

I think it must be nearly 3 years since I started using Open Office now ... the Windows equivalent came with the new computer but it was only a 3 month trial, sadly ... but this problem just started about a week ago.

Went back from my trusty wee notebook and haven't downloaded anything new, have run all my security programs over and over and drat, nothing seems to be helping.

Just noticed that when I went to the Open Office site itself, while I couldn't find an easy 'update' version you have type button, they do have a newer version of the actual program now ...

Thought I'd by-pass the problem by trying that ... until it started downloading and I discovered the estimated time was 49 minutes (egad, especially since I have a high-speed internet connection).

It would be so much easier to get the update to work but have great faith in your advice and am a bit concerned re your words, "don't like the way that sounds", BeeCeeBee - so really the problems are not a sign something else far more serious is amiss - eep!

    :)

More likely than not there is a file within the program that has been corrupted but I would rather wait for someone better equipped to diagnose this than me.

Although I recommend Open Office, I haven't used much myself.

Mara - when you're working in this document, is it a word processing document? That would mean that you're using the Writer portion of Open Office. Just curious.

I'd keep on recommending it, Dragnet, as it's worked flawlessly for me up until now. :)

Yes, using just the writer portion of it for word processing ... and since my last post, have tried more than a dozen additional time to update - with no luck.

Perhaps the only alternative is to simply uninstall and reload ... but if I uninstall the program, it won't 'destroy' any of the zillion documents I've created with it, will it? Eep! Or, I wonder, is it one of these that one can no uninstall, just download newer version and it will overwrite automatically when installed?

You can try reinstalling over your current installation. It shouldn't affect your documents. They should stay intack. They are in My Documents somewhere and not in the Open Office Programs Files folder. Correct?

Nope, each of the documents in simply kept in it's applicable folder (and it's embarrassing how many of them I actually have! :)).

So thanks, Dragnet ... I'll simply download and hope the new version simply overwrites the old one.

Taking your "nope" as meaning that your files are in normal folders in Documents or on your doesktop, etc., all that may happen is that the icon will no longer relate to a program to open the file. This will correct itself once a new version is installed. If you overwrite you may notice no change at all to the file icons.
