We'll have to pick this up later. It's getting late for me. I recommend you contact asus tech. support @ 1-510-739-3777.
Hitachi can be reached @ 1-888-426-5214.
There may be motherboard hardware limitations preventing recognition of the drive (I don't know everything).;)
You should verify in the Bios that your Sata ports are set to IDE mode.

When you look at the hard drive there should be two little wires(jumpers) is there something on them connecting them?

This link here is an image showing the SATA ports power, and factory switch. The manual says to ignore the last connector as it is for factory use only.

it sounds like when i got my ssd, my computer would see the hard drive but not let me do anything with it. I ended up having to send it back and get another one.

Were you able to use the hard drive when your computer saw it? Like add files to it, delete, and move files onto it. Once i put the computer, and only after its booted up, i can plug it into its sata spot and my computer will detect it and even let me write files to it like a regular hard drive.

    Hi all,

SATA drives do not have jumpers they are all MASTER only.
SATA ports on older boards have limitations, the size of the HDDs being able to be used is one of the limitations.

There will be a section in the BIOS probably under additional hardware or integrated periferals (spelt right? )
the SATA controller will be enabled as it can see the drive (this is for your info only so you dont need to disable it)
As mentioned before if it can see the drive but then halts then it is waiting for an input from the user, NOT all SATA ports are bootable SATA ports, meaning they can be used for storage but the controller cannot use it to boot the device (this only happens on VERY old MOBOs though)
Its probably the limitation of the MOBO with the 1TB drive - if you want to sell it let me know :D
You could try using a PCI SATA card (I have used these in the past where a MOBO limits the amount of storage)
Out of interest have you tried accessing the SATA controller options as in when it brings up its mini post screen you press F4 or something (options should be RAID 1 RAID 0 RAID 5 or JBOD you want JBOD if its an option)

sorry this is all hit and miss, but that MOBO is fairly old, I have an old socket 754 board that did the same on a 2TB drive, I just added a cheap PCI SATA add in card off ebay was about £5

To be honest I wasnt able to enter the Silicon Raid image settings (the part of the bios that controls sata) When it got to the screen it says "pres ctrl+s or f4 to enter raid utility" and is un-responsive to those commands.

Sorry but i won't sell it i just paid over 140 bux CAN for it.

I believe Dalo is right about his limitation idea. I will look into it in a few minutes.
As for the RAID settings, they won't help, as your mobo only supports RAID 0 and RAID 1 no JBOD.

If it is the case of your motherboard limited by hard drive size, then the fix will be to purchase a simple add in card which can be very cheap.

Alright thanks again, this is the first time i've ever built a PC from scratch and I pretty much don't know of hardware limitations or anything like that.

Okay, looking into this further now. It seems your mainboard should cope with a 1TB harddrive fine.

Looking through similar problems, people have found that using a PCI SATA add in card, they can get the system to recognise the drive etc and use it, but not boot from it.

The only solution I have managed to find is that you need a modded BIOS in order to allow it to boot from your new harddrive.

I would suggest that the solution may lie in updating your BIOS to the latest version but nowhere on the ASUS site for your mainboard, does the BIOS updates mention SATA ability. This leads me to believe you may only be able to boot from your new 1TB SATA drive with a modded BIOS.

Also, have you been able to boot from CD ROM before this problem?
