Hello! I am a new comer... seek help!

Hi All,
Frank to everyone, by joining this group, i am aiming to upgrade my knowledge and get your experience on dealing with Window Server 2003 R2 in my office.

I would like to get someone help on details guiding on the way of making :AUTO START the above server by specific timing each day.

I've managed to make this function in my owned PC thru BIOS setting but i had assumed that my this server's BIOS doesnot come with the RTC Alarm function.

I would be greatly appreciated your advise and help and also looking forward on myself to be a contributor in the Forum in the future.

If the function you need is not available in BIOS, you will need to power up
your system remotely.

You can do it using 'Wake on LAN' (WoL) functionality which is available on
most modern computers.

I'm using WolCmd.exe, a command prompt utility (freeware) from:
(Brian Slack)

You can issue this command from the local or remote subnet. It is possible
to make it work from the Internet too with some tinkering.

If you want to automate the process, then, of course, you'll have to create
a scheduled task on some computer that is always on.

i would like to double confirm again, for Window Server 2003, we are UNABLE to AUTOMATIC START the computer by schedule task in the server itself? And we can only Schedule task RESTART computer server 2003 by the server itself, right?

Dear Peggy Tan,

You've got me slightly confused. Let's try to recap.
You are talking about two different things:

1. AUTOMATIC START of the computer. This is when the computer is powered
off. You can power on such a computer by BIOS timer. You stated in your
previous post that this BIOS feature is unavailable on your Windows Server
2003 computer. Alternative method of starting a computer is by Wake-on-LAN
(WoL) technolgy. WoL works by sending a special packet over the network to a
target computer that you want to wake up. I'm using WolCmd.exe, a command
prompt utility (freeware) from (Brian Slack). I'm a
technical trainer in charge of my classroom and I used this program to wake
up all my computers (in the classroom). I made a batch file on the
instructor computer that issued wolcmd.exe to each student computer in the
classroom.

2. RESTART. This is a running computer that needs to be restarted (or reset
or rebooted). You can schedule this task from the computer itself.

For case number 1. When the original computer is powered off, you need a
second operating computer from which you will send a WoLCmd.exe. This
computer can be whatever you want. It doesn't have to be a server. It
doesn't have to be a Windows computer at all. I don't know how this task is
important to you, but if it was important to me I could build a device from
scrap parts just for the purpose of waking up other computer(s) on set
schedule.

Here's finally the answer to your question.

a) Yes, we are unable to AUTOMATICALLY START a powered off computer from the
scheduled task in the computer itself.

Yes, we can schedule to RESTART a computer from the scheduled task in the
computer itself.
