Google Chrome

This has got me stumped when ever I try to use chrome browser.

When did this start occurring, did it coincide with any Windows updates or other program install/updates you can think of?

I don't think System Restore would do much in this case but have you tried using it to go back a few days, that would be the best thing to try.

Others seem to suggest that it coincided with installing/updating Google Earth and other people were able to unpin Chrome from the taskbar and set it back on the taskbar which caused it to work.

 

It seems to have started when I updated google chrome from file hippo cant say that for a hundred %.
I will use fire fox until google sort it. Lots of references in google search to it.
My laterst system restore is over a year old so wont touch that

What makes you think that? Windows 7 should create restore points automatically if none were otherwise created over a 7 day period. Have you actually checked your system restore?

I went to start and typed system restore in the search BC and it produced this

That is a backup date. I don't know why that came up when you typed system restore. Go to "All Programs" > "Accessories" > "System Tools" and click on "System Restore."

I'm not sure at which version it happened but Google Chrome now installs into the 'C:\Program Files' directory by default instead of the 'Application Data' directory. I know this from doing a recent re-installation of the OS and Google Chrome. Chrome being downloaded from Google's own download page.

Since you downloaded Chrome from File Hippo and installed that, it might be that you now have two installations of Chrome. One in 'Application Data' and one in 'Program Files'. Your browser shortcut is likely to be the one that starts up the Application Data version of Chrome but what happens then is that the Program Files version gets detected. This overrides the Application Data installation of Chrome and so you get the message that it will switch.

However, I have to say that this is somewhat a guess but it seems it could be a cause of the problem.

Try going to C:\Program Files and see if Google Chrome is indeed installed there. If it is, go into the sub-directories and find Chrome's 'exe'. Send a shortcut for it to the Desktop and then try starting Chrome using the shortcut.

If that solves the problem, you could just use this shortcut instead of the present one. Also if it does and I'm right about there being two installations of Chrome, you might want to remove the Application Data installation of it ..although it probably won't do any harm to leave it as it is. It would only be a bit of disk space taken up rather than being anything active.

 

I get so much help on here and now another problem been solved.

I have tried to find system restore but get this. I have tried to work it out but am now stuck.

 

Hi Bob, I see you managed to get the System properties page which I assume you got from System Protection on the left.
Try it again and lets see if you can get these results.
First is this-



Click on the "Configure" button (Red Aroow), you should get this, are all setting similar to what is on here? Dot in the top one and slider in similar position?

Think I have solved the no find disks problems (tune up utilities I had to turn off turbo) you have a pm NEV contains a link that I did not want to post on here.

Thanks Bob, for anyone else, Bob had "Tune Up Utilities" this has a so called "Turbo Boost" facility, from information found elsewhere, he discovered that turning off that Turbo Boost cured the system restore problem.
