I was having problems with my Toshiba laptop so I installed a fresh Windows 7 on it. It works great now except that it says the device driver for the network controller is not installed. I can't setup my router or get online wirelessly. Windows searched for the driver but could not find it.

When you go to device manager it does not tell you the name of the device, just that it doesn't work and needs a driver update.

How can I fix this or is it even fixable?

    Thanks!

Also, my laptop does show my wireless printer so it was able to find that. Why would that work and not my router?

Hello Aces and Welcome to CHF,

Open your Device Manager and expand Network Adapters. Right click your network PCI and select properties.
Select the Details tab at the top and click the drop down menu under Property. Change Device description to Hardware ID's.

My network adapter hardware ID is PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_8168. The Vendor ID is 10EC and the Device ID is
8168. Do a search here for the correct driver......http://www.pcidatabase.com/index.php

I would suggest just going to the Toshiba site and downloading the drivers for your specific laptop...

Sounds like a simple solution but it usually does not work out as well as it would seem.

This can be true but I'd still consider it the first step.

Normally I would agree but the OP lists his computer expertise as "Some Experience".
Unless he knows exactly which network controller he needs he could be faced with making
a choice between Intel, Atheros or Realtek. Having the model number of a laptop isn't
always enough information to download the correct driver. Toshiba is known for using
different hardware in same model, same OS computers. Just my 2¢, my 10¢ is free.... [IMG]

Okay so I tried to download the drivers from Toshiba and like allheart says, they have several listed for my laptop model. The network controller still does not work but my wireless internet does work now.

If you look at my computer under computer and devices it has a yellow exclamation mark and shows it needs to be troubleshooted. The troubleshooting always goes back to the network controller.

In the meantime, I was told my hard drive is gonig bad and that I needed a new hard drive and a fresh windows install.

My laptop was booting slowly, taking forever to wake up, running slowly and about 2 weeks ago I got one of those blue screens of death. Well I tried to do restore or recover on it and neither would work. My husband's aunt is in IT and she said to try a fresh Windows install first so I did that's when the network controller issue popped up.

Anyway this morning the laptop would NOT wake up. I had to just shut it down and leave it. When I turned it back on I get the message that it didn't shut down correctly. Also I cannot turn off my touch pad because the function keys on my keyboard do not work, none of them.

A brand new laptop just like this one is on clearance for $329. Do I really need a hard drive? Is it easy to replace? SHould I just replace my laptop? The laptop I want is $550 but I don't want to buy it if there's a possibility of fixing mine cheaply.

    What should I do?

Did you get a popup on the screen saying the hard drive is failing? Or maybe someone suggested that the drive is failing. If someone suggested it, did they do any test on the drive such as running chkdsk? Some hard drives support S.M.A.R.T. which is a feature that monitors the hard drive in hopes of detecting a failing hard drive. If the S.M.A.R.T. feature detected something, you may have received a pop up on your screen.

You initially said (just a few days ago) the laptop was running fine and that the only problem was the controller. So something has changed. It could be the hard drive. It could be something else. What are you using for virus/malware protection?

If you forced a power shut down by holding the power button for several seconds or by removing power, then indeed, the computer wasn't shut down properly.

This is probably because the Tosiba software that handles this wasn't installed after you did a fresh install of Windows 7.

The guy just said that he felt the hard drive was failing because of what it was doing. It did seem to work fine at first but now that it won't wake up properly I'm not sure what the deal is. How would I know if the hard drive is having issues? The Blue Screen I got went away so quickly that I wasn't able to see what it said, just something about a fatal error.

What is the make of the hard drive?
