free Antivirus for Windows 98SE?

Discussion in 'Microsoft Windows' started by slickrcbdnews@gmail.com, May 29, 2009.

  1. AVG just announced that they no longer support Windows 98. Worse, they
just released an "update" that does nothing but nag me to update and
then tell me I can't because my OS is too old.

What alternatives do I have to install? I don't want to spend any
money on my old computer and searching on Google is extremely
frustrating trying to find an anti-virus program that supports 98 and
that I don't have to pay for.

Please answer with program solutions and not snarky "you need to
upgrade your OS" or "you need to buy a new computer". I have win98 on
this OLD computer for a reason, so it is not an option.

    Avast has a free version
that will work with Win95 and up.

Not only is it free, it's a good one

avast but it has announced plans to end support by the end of 2009, so
then you are stuck with clamwin, which does not offer real time
protection. You might want to try a linux for older computers, like u-
    lite. http://u-lite.org .

There are things you can do to make the threat of viruses and spyware
fairly minimal. Use Opera or a Gecko browser with the noscript addon,
like seamonkey and kmeleon. Also avoid using internet explorer and
outlook as much as possible. Use Thunderbird instead of outlook. BUTTT,
since microsoft no longer supports 98 you're just going to experience the
law of diminishing returns. Thus linux oses are your best bet, for
    security without expense.

I didn't see anything on their website about dropping win98 support

but if they do, Clamwin has announced that they do plan on adding real time
    scanning in the near future.
