Ethernet connection is basic to most versions of Windows and I believe including 98 though hardware drivers were necessary if the ethernet connection was not Intel hardware.
Yes Lenovo all around best in my mind. Now best without regard to price I would say Msi putting Asus down with Lenovo for the price conscious.

D-Link DWA-130 arrived today with a CD user manual. Don't know if any drivers there but I D/L one that says it is for this. Instructions are likely on the CD but I guess you plug in in or maybe install the driver first or something. Will try it later. Sure hope it works. Would like to get "unplugged". Said I could return it within 30 days if not work.

Insert the USB wireless first, BG and then install the driver.

That means the Wireless Configuration Service (WCZ) is not enabled...here are some things you can do to enable it:
    http://www.corenetworkz.com/2009/07/how-to-start-wireless-zero.html
Have we decided whether or not there is a switch for wireless on the laptop somewhere either front or sides or a series of keys to activate the wireless?

There is an Fn key at lower L corner of keyboard and an F2 key with wireless symbol in the top row of F function keys
I am plugged into ethernet now and that works. Went through some other things but didnt succeed. Keeps saying local connection unplugged and WZCZ is disabled. I clicked repair and windows could not repair it. Apparently the WZC and local connection is turned off.

Looked at services WZC. Clicked start. Said cant be started for either disabled or no enabled devices associated with it.
Looks like there is a wireless and wireless 2 connection but they are not connected.

What happened when you tried the link in my last post here? It sounds like if you tap FN key and F2 at the same time, the wireless signal should activate but that is for the laptop.
That really has nothing to do with the new wireless adapter working. When you plug it in is there a light you see blinking in the DLink adapter?

Yes the light on adapter blinks. It is the laptop. Should the Ethernet cable be disconnected when trying to get the adapter to work? I thought it should. Seems like adapter is installed but for some reason cannot connect to network. Going to call D-Link today. I have tried everything I know to do and read the KB articles. I will go through the above link carefully.

When wireless and wired are present, the wireless normally is default so it should not matter BG. If it blinks then you should be able to click on either the windows network icon and see "wireless connections available" but with the DLink if you installed their software you may have made their application default which would mean that you need to click on their application in the taskbar and enable the wireless connection with it. If you go into the Network and Sharing Center and choose "Manage Wireless Connections", you may have to manually choose the DLink there first before you will see it elsewhere.

Well, D-Link feels it is not problem with Adapter DMA and I agree. Adapter seemed to install well and be working. The problem is the Wireless Zero Connection that is Stopped, will not start, and the tray icons say local connection is unplugged and wireless network connection is not connected. And I don't want to mess around because it DOES work with Ethernet connected to router. I tried this and it seems OK but have no idea how to fix WZC or if it CAN be fixed. Tried Microsoft Fixit 50469, KB87112, tutorials, and no luck yet. But I will keep trying if I learn anything new. Just cannot get WZC to start .And all I can do with connections apparently is to enable or disable, not remove, so don't want to create a bunch of new networks that I cant delete or get to work. I will keep going over all this for I would like it t be wireless. Thanks for the suggestions so far. I will look them over and see if I missed anything. But I still have 2 new phone lines and 3 PCs that can use FiOS High Speed so I am happy with that. Very pleased with speed and ease.
Do not know how to associate or understand the options.
In local area properties Client For Microsoft Networks and file and print sharing are unchecked: the rest are checked.
The Verizon install person tried to set it up but ran out of time and had to leave, so I don't know if he may have changed a setting.

Both of those should be checked BG.

I checked them. Is there a way I can associate enabled devise with Wireless Zero Configuration? It says Stopped, not disabled. Nothing is associated with it so cannot start. In Recovery I changed it from Take No Action to Restart but still says no enabled devices associated with WZC. Think if I found way to do this it might work.

You did install the correct driver for the USB wireless adapter, didn't you, BG?

Did you follow Rich's instructions in post #46? Yes or No?

If you did and the WZC still isn't running, try this.

To enable the Wireless Zero Configuration service so it starts up automatically, go to the Start button. Select the Settings option and then select Control Panel. If you are using the Windows XP view, select thePerformance and Maintenance category and then select Administrative Tools. If you are using the Classic View, then select Administrative Tools. Click the Services icon in the left pane. Click the Wireless Zero Configuration icon in the right pane and change the Startup Type dropbox to Automatic. This setting will set the service to start automatically at boot time. Then click the Start button to start the Wireless Zero Wireless Zero Configuration service and click the OK button.

Tried all these things hopefully correctly but have had no success. Wireless Zero Configuration service is stopped and cant be started because "disabled or no enabled devices associated with it". WZC and Wizard not work, Microsoft Fixit not work, I do not know how to manually configure, and really have no more time to spend with it now. Stopped by Computer shop and explained and said want to have it evaluated and tell me if can or cant be fixed and if so how much. I am afraid if I keep messing with it I will make it so cant even use Ethernet. Have had this laptop and a desktop there before and I don't distrust them, but what if anything can or should I do to protect my desktop shortcuts and My Documents folder from harm. I don't have anything secretive or what I believe to be damaging or risky and they said didn't need to connect to network or have any passwords for tin it is a hardware/settings thing.
But I would the to have it crash and have to pay to retrieve hard drive data. Aside from copying My Doc and Favorite shortcuts to HDD, anything else I should do?

Gave up, copied my stuff, and dropped it at shop to evaluate. They felt it was a configuration/settings problem..

Took to shop, ready in 3 hours. Said wireless card was bad but my USP adapter worked. (thanks Rich & Cindy for tip). Their wireless USB would cost $25 so glad I already had one.
Showed me how it worked on their network, took it home and connected to mine. All in configuring and the USB wireless.
Fixed printer. Didnt think ink soaked or I did it but papaer caught on foam and pulled it up. Put it back in properly and works fine. Doesnt stop canon tank from leaking but I will have to clean it more often. Maybe weekly. $105 total cost. Dont know if good or bad but at least both work and I am happy and free of ethernet cable. I couldnt do more with either of them. Bargain. Case closed. Thread getting too long anyway.
