That's what so 'interesting' about this particular strain of flu, perhaps - some young healthy people like the Cadets mentioned come through it fine while other young healthy people die.

The article is certainly something to make one sit up and take notice and I wonder why so many in Australia are getting much sicker with it than elsewhere - at least right now.

Remember reading about the 1918 flu and although we know more medically now than then, it does have similarities in many ways. Apparently most people simply didn't worry about it until it there right there among their own families and communities and I'm afraid most of us have become quite complacent while feeling our new and better medicines will 'save us'.

Here here on TV this morning, another 9 people have died, here in OZ, from Swine Flu.
I think everyone is too complacent, and this is going to be a real problem, not only here, but the Northern Hemisphere when your Winter hits.
Just hope they fast track vaccinating entire Countries.
Health authorities here predict 25% of our population will get this Virus.
Thats more than 5 million people.
I suspect no one will take this Pandemic, seriously, till it's too late.

I am not suggesting that we do not take this seriously but I do know that numbers can be deceiveing. Who are the poor people who dies. What was their age, general age etc. Is it not possible that while these people did in fact acquire swine flu would they perhaps have suffered a similar fate had the virus been a different strain?

They seem to be the young, that are dying, which is unusual.
A pregnant Mother, died from Swine flu yesterday, here.
    She was about 34yrs.
Wheras, the old and the frail normally die, from flu related illnesses, this Virus
seems to have devastating effects, on the young, under 35's.
Previous Flu strains, weren't as deadly as this strain.
Our Hospitals, can't handle the number of people attending, sick with Flu like illnesses.
Still, no one is wearing masks, inside the Hospital, where my Wife works.

As I indicated yesterday 18 military cadets were found to be infected and not one hospitalized. That seem to indicate contrary but as I said, I am not suggesting that we done take this seriously.

It seems to be 'willy-nilly' and perhaps this is where the problem truly lies.

Even the experts can't predict which of the young will die (another child died here yesterday) - or the older people, for that matter.

Re the Cadets ... hmm, I wonder. I wonder because here in Canada I believe every person entering the Services (at any level) receives a series of injections to safeguard them from as much as possible. Wonder if the Cadets received something similar.

And while I understand why it's done, apparently many of those who have existing illnesses and die here are not counted as being fatalities from the flu, even with flu symptoms.

Even our Government here admits they don't have an accurate accounting of those afflicted with this strain because, sick with flu symptoms or not, we are encouraged to not go to our physicians or a hospital unless we are truly feel we are at risk of dying - simply because as Dougie mentioned, our hospitals aren't equipped or staffed to manage flocks of people coming in for things like this, nor do they want the virus to spread.

What I'm truly confused about ... it's already flu season in Australia yet as Dougie said, staff in hospitals aren't wearing masks - but the World Health Organization warns of dire threats if the strain mutates, in particular.

All the warnings from all the expects - about this and our so-called 'Super Bug' already existing in most hospitals and killing far too many - all sorts of precautionary procedures in place, yet not always used. Very odd indeed. Leaves many of us wondering is this truly serious - or not.

Our news was saying last night that Japan, in spite of their crowded population, has far fewer cases ... perhaps because more of their citizens wear masks, even out on the streets and in stores?

I have been unwell for the last few days, I called the doctors and they said:-
'as there is a current outbreak of swine flu, you cannot go outside and should drink plenty of fluids'
This was after me telling them that I had been sick < thats all.

I think that the whole thing is well and truly blown out of proportion based on the above.
