If I am reading what Dalo has said properly it is not a question of checking the PS3 it is a question of checking the drive. It apparently needs to be FAT32 and some of the larger and newer drives are NTFS. You can check it by looking at at its properties when it is connected to your computer. J

ust open My Computer and right click on the drive. Select properties and it wil tell you if it is Fat32 or not.

    BeeCeeBee is exactly right -
most smaller USB drives are formatted in FAT32 which all pcs can read - and XBOX and PS3 etc.
Larger drives are normally NTFS and these again can be read by all PC's, but not by XBOX or PS3 -
check to see if yours is FAT32 or NTFS - if it is already FAT32 - you may need to run an update from Sony to allow your PS3 to recognise the files and codecs.

Capacity only.:) When they averaged 256 512 they were all FAT32 as the capacity increased more and more were formatted as NTFS.

Just keep in mind that you can format an NTFS drive to FAT32 but you will lose anything that is on it.
