Files from Windows to Apple?

    If I back up pictures on a USB external hard drive from a Windows computer can I then transfer them to a Mac OS computer?

    It is my understanding that Mac will recognize jpeg, gif and probably png files without any special conversion software.

    In any event you are in no danger of losing them but I would always make a second copy any time I was experimenting with a technology that is new to me.

    You can still access them from the usb drive. OSX can read fat32 and ntfs file systems so your pictures will be viewable. You can also save word docs, spreadsheets and any other Windows files and OSX will be able to read them. You can even run Windows apps using an emulator like Parallels. I transfer files from my iMac to Windows and from Windows to OSX all the time.

    Good to see another Mac user here.

    Just to follow up on what BSchwarz said about NTFS. Macs runnin OS-X can read NTFS, however they can't write to an NTFS formatted drive. This is probably not an issue because your USB drive is most lilkely formatted FAT32, not NTFS.

    One other thing, once you connect that USB drive to your Mac, the Mac will put small files on the drive that will be visible when you connect the USB drive back to your Windows machine. Don't worry about them. You can safely delete them.
