Today's updates installed OK on my desktop, but 5 failed to install
(numerous times) on my Compaq laptop.

    The updates are:
    Office 2003: KB972580, KB974554, KB973705, KB974771
    Works 8: KB973636

The error code is 646, which seems to be a catchall.

    Office is SP3
    Works is 8.5

    Vista HP 6.2

Never had any problems with updates before.

    Ideas please

    Bill

  2. Bill,

The first thing to try would be to put the Office 2003 installation CD into your
CD drive and then try the installs again.

    Harry.

    P.A. and Harry

Thanks to both of you. SP3 is installed. Tried with CD installed. Still no
    joy.

Will sleep on it overnight and contact free support if necessary.

Possibility: Windows Update agent file Wups2.dll is registered incorrectly
and registry files that relate to the Wups2.dll file are missing.

Method 1: Register the Windows Update files
    1. Click Start and then type notepad in the Start Search box.
    2. Click Notepad in the Programs list.
    3. Copy the following commands, and then paste them into the opened Notepad
    window:
    REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL /S
    REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL /S
    REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL /S
    REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL /S
    REGSVR32 WUCLTUX.DLL /S
    REGSVR32 WUWEBV.DLL /S
    REGSVR32 JSCRIPT.DLL /S
    REGSVR32 MSXML3.DLL /S
    4. In Notepad, on the File menu, click Save As.
    5. In the Save as type list, click All Files.
    6. In the File name box, type register.bat.
    7. Save the Register.bat file to your desktop.
    8. Right-click the Register.bat file, and then click Run as administrator.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation,
type the password or click Continue.
    9. Try to install updates again.

    Windows Update Agent

Click Start, click Run, click Browse, locate the file that you saved and
    then click Open.

Add the /wuforce switch to the end of the run command, and then click OK.
For example, the run command may appear as the following:
    "C:\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe" /wuforce
    Click Run.

Follow the steps to complete the wizard.

    Important

To reinstall Windows Update Agent - download the relevant file from one of
the links provided above and save it to a drive where Vista is not loaded
because the file cannot be launched directly from the system root directory.

Click Start, click Run, type: "D:\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce"
(without quotations) and then press Enter to install the Windows Update
    engine.

Note: There is a space between "D:\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe" and
    "/wuforce"

D: is the drive where Windows is not installed (ie a flash drive or a 2nd
    hard drive etc)

Each of these updates refer to Outlook 2003 which is NOT installed on the
laptop, but is on the desktop.

I fancy there is a problem with the MS update selection process as I have
found a posting in the windows.public.live.mail.desktop "Outlook Windows
Updates" from Phil reporting a similar prompt to update although Outlook is
    not installed on his PC.

    Thanks for all your assistamce.

  6. Known, "will not fix" bug. Updates for OL 2003 will be offered as long as
Office 2003 is installed on the computer, whether or not OL itself is
    installed.

If OL is not installed and you're offered OL updates (security or
otherwise), just "hide" them and be done with it.

PS: No, hiding this month's OL Junk Mail Filter Update will not hide future
ones. You've gotta hide each one as it comes down the pike.

    Update

Eventually I decided to remove my Office 2003 completely from my laptop and
reinstall it from scratch including Outlook although I don't require it.

Following that, WU reports I need SP3 and a couple of other fixes, and guess
what. Error Code 646! So, I guess the laptop is completely vulnerable.

Its really time someone from MS stood up and told us what is going on and
how they intend fixing this embarrassment.

The MVP's and others who are trying their best to help are being left out to
    dry by MS.

Vista HP 32 bit fully patched (Maybe).
    Office 2003 Professional (not patched)
    Compaq 6500 series.

    Bill (Windows user since 3.0)
Hoping someone can rattle the cage.
