External Hard Drive Permissions

    Hi

    I just hooked up my External Hard Drive in my recently Upgraded Win7 machine which was previously in in my XP Machine and then in my other Win7 Machine and cannot access files as I not have permission apparently.

    I know I can access them via right click properties ,, security and resetting permissions but I have hundreds of folders and sub folders. which means doing 1 by one.

    is there a quick fix for this or is that the only way to do it.

    Look how complicated that really is though and having gone down that road I can tell you half the time, the access is still denied and it could be because of corrupted sectors I don't really know.
    Now all I do is boot to a linux live-cd and copy and paste whatever I want to use to a flash drive or portable hard drive and then to a new folder wherever I am working. Actually I have seldom seen where there are more than a few files we really need anyway.

    After you follow the above take ownership you may have problems sharing ( folders with Gold Padlocks ).. I did so what I done to solve this.

    1) Right click on the drive
    2) Click Properties
    3) Advanced
    4) Change Permissons
    5) Tick Box "replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object"
    6) Click Ok

    It should work Joker It just seems to me like a big complicated chore that way and would only make sense to me if you wanted everything there and there was a lot of files at stake and as I said I have gone down that permissions road and been thwarted at various stages for reasons I never understood.

    Rich you seem to be misunderstanding the situation it is DONE and WORKED and actually it was no more complicated then most tasks once you understand the steps which went with NO PROBLEMS
